Minecraft is a sandbox construction game created by Mojang AB. It's development started around the 10th of May 2009. Pre-orders for the full game started being accepted on the 13th of June, 2009.

Minecraft is a game about placing blocks to build anything you can imagine. At night monsters come out, make sure to build a shelter before that happens. It also has music by C418.

I've renamed the old version of the game "Minecraft Classic", and will be slowly phasing it out. I won't remove it, though. Just hide it.

You can read more on the development blog, or here.

Last week, our very own
Jeb got married! Meanwhile, the rest of us were taking a short vacation to celebrate the recent milestone of 10,000,000 PC & 10,000,000 Pocket Edition sales! This week, it’s back to work and we have some fun treats in store!

  • Added new UI for horses, to control saddle/armour/inventory.
  • Started to move over various things to a new Attribute system. You may see some new tooltips, don’t be scared!
  • Lots of work towards a new Resource Pack system, but not finished yet. Currently still compatible with texture packs.
  • New internal chat system; lots of messages should be translated now that weren’t previously.
  • [Bug MC-1497] – Damaged Anvils do not show damage in inventory or item frame
  • [Bug MC-13626] – XP Bar in creative
  • [Bug MC-13640] – Hay Bales do not burn when set on fire
  • [Bug MC-13662] – XP, Health and hungerbar are buggy with horses
  • [Bug MC-13770] – Using a horse spawn egg on a horse works only when riding the horse
  • [Bug MC-13852] – Can’t throw enderpearls while mounting a horse
  • [Bug MC-14220] – Player appearance not updating in multiplayer (armor, tools)
  • [Bug MC-14417] – No way to remove armor or saddles off a horse
  • [Bug MC-14422] – Horse name tag is shown while riding
  • [Bug MC-15138] – Sides of cauldron has compass texture after placing compass in Item Frame
  • [Bug MC-15201] – Bottom part of some types of horses-harness is misplaced
  • [Bug MC-15416] – Selected item disappears when armor breaks

To get the snapshot, use the new launcher available in the link below. To return to 1.5.2, simply start the old launcher and play as normal.

I find it funny how Minecraft, a game running on Java, can support a hundred player multiplayer while high end gaming engine can only support up to 24 player multiplayer

Your username says it all.

One game is simplistic and low resource intensive. The other prides itself on high tech graphical engines and systems. Does it really require a genius?

mine-craft has simple physics, low polygons and textures, is very simple, in most ascpects. high end gaming engines are tougher to run smoothly at those rates. that is all. some high end engines do aloow hundreds players, btw, like Planetside, and some mmo's. minecraftis simply simple, and thus, easier to run.

Most game developers limit it so that the maps for games aren't completely full of people, the size of the map depends on the amount of players. That, and hundreds/thousands of players can cause LOTS of lag, so it also helps reduce lag.

...what? lol you just said it could, now you're saying it can't? (even though it can). Anyway, basically what I was saying is, lots of developers limit it mainly because of map sizes. An example would be call of duty. You wouldn't want 1,000 players on maps of that size, but Minecraft having basically an endless map, can easily support 1,000 or more players, if you got a good enough server with enough ram and a good processor.

Minecraft is a small building game that looks like it will be very boring at first glance. You look, and you see blocks, you see animals and you see people building dirt houses. Without knowing the mechanics, it cannot be understood. However, once you play, you can suddenly see why people enjoy the game. Minecraft is portrayed as a building game. You put blocks down and build things, which is reflected in the only easily accessible free version. Minecraft is NOT simply a block building game. It…
