This is a late reply, but just watch X's first Minecraft video, you'll see. They were much brighter.
You can turn off smooth lighting in video options to make it look like that again if you want

Playing with digital Legos while running from zombies! Includes it's own creative & intuitive crafting system. Worth every penny!
Minecraft is really good. Good there's no updates till next year 'cos I have some really fun mods.
