www.Dom4Minions.com as an Internet Server Thread - Dominions 4: Thrones of Ascension

(do not take this personally it is being posted on multiple forums)

I continue adding bits and pieces. Truthfully I didnt expect so many new people to Dominions until Dom4 hits Steam.
As always I am powered by kudos and swayed by requests.

I am pushing to including the "always open" games like Dom3Minions has.
I am interested in offering daily remade maps and scenarios.
I will host any files and pages and domains and emails that are dominions oriented. Longest serving and very stable.
Due to a hardware donation (from one of the other games) I might have an upgraded server soon.
My RL controls how much time I can spend but if you have a preference of what you would like me to work on and in what order then please let me know.

I am currently hosting multiple MP games.
One thing that keeps popping up. No matter how many times I say it people still seem to be telling others what the server will or will not do. Whoever sets up the game decides what they want. ANYTHING you have seen on another dom server, I can do. Anything you ever WANTED in a dom game, at least ask.
I like to try.

Yeah in a way I guess it is. Back when Internet was first starting everything on the net was registered into the whois files including the people who ran the internet systems. GP1628 was my Internet ID. You could query me on the whois like a domain to find out almost anything. My name, address, phone, domains, etc.

So I guess it is a way of saying "older than dirt". At least older than virtual dirt.
On the net before the net was Internet.

I may actually have to ask you for some server space pretty soon, because my ISP is terminating all consumer home page services at the end of the year, which means all of my Dom3 documentation and other such will be going poof on January 1st.

I could always move everything to Dropbox or Skydrive, but those are less than optimal as permanent solutions. I'll also need somewhere to host Dom4 DB in a week or two when it's ready.

I tend to put your stuff on the server anyway so I can quickly grep out information when I need it

I'm also always willing to host stuff on the llamaserver (for example I host quite a few people's mods). It's very easy to create an ftp account for you or anyone else who wants to host dominions stuff.

So far no full PbEM requests. I think they are all waiting for you.
One mixed PbEM and Direct game. Some wanting emailed turns or reminders.
But they all said they would prefer your server when it is ready.

Wow. Even after posting this thread I still see people on the various forums posting what my server cant do.

I would hate to have to go to a pablum menu and try to list everything people have requested for games and gotten.
emailed turns, reminders, a webpage to check on game status, admin access, rollbacks, resets, stale reports, backups, restores, mods, AIs, special maps,

Not to mention creative requests such as:
lock on players going AI, checks on player playing multiple gods or playing wrong nation, text message to phones, off-turn public postings, random assignments, controlled god selection, reporting in-game messaging, AI fill-in-the-blanks, musical chairs, gossip scorepage, mod-swap on timer, and surprise me.

Sorry for the rant. People, please, there is an idea page now on www.dom4minions.com that lists many options to suggest some to the person setting up the game.
But notice the last line which says:
"or anything else that you have seen on any dominions server, or in any dominions game, or on some other gaming server, or that you WANTED in any dominions game.
Just ask."

Edi or others, If needed I can host files or services on my own server on dominions.realites.org (I can also host on [whatever you want].realites.org if you prefer).

The server itself runs on FreeBSD so I'm not sure that I will be able to host a server for the game itself (the linux version might work in server mode with the appropriate compatiblity libraries, but I didn't try it yet as I mainly play solo games on my windows box), but my connection is on fiber optic so bandwidth should not be a problem if you need space to host or mirror your files.

I have full control on the server so if something need installing for your needs we can discuss it (PHP, Perl or Python, database, ...)

And a question: can your server send out email notifications when the turn is done - I find myself checking several times a day if a turn is ready :-)

My server can do anything that is wanted
Yes notifications by email, text message to phone, voice, post, and even tickle your balls (that was requested once)

NOW I have good news and bad news.
The Dom4Minions.com server should be greatly upgraded soon.
But like another server admin once answered when asked when....
"It will be almost instantly. Or not. An hour at most, or if that doesnt work then a week."

No I dont think it should be that long but the truth is that I really REALLY thought I could slip in a fast little upgrade.
And it didnt.
I have overclocked my meds and have 5 family members frantically helping me right now.
Dominions timers have all been stopped until I can be sure.

Gandalf, couldn't you just throw in a symlink for now? What's the old and new temp dir and what kind of error are you getting?
