I have asked many friends around that why do they leave MMORPGs. And regardless of differences in conditions of life, backgrounds and job contents, they all have quite similar answers. They don’t have time. Today we have developed game market filled with all kinds of games. “Since I can get the same fun, why should I spend my busy time in MMORPGs?”
They still remember those golden old days in WoW. We pull together to kill a boss down. But they just don’t have enough patience and leisure time as before.
When we go back home and open the client, wait your team members all gather up and dungeon for at least an hour, let alone the time being defeated by a boss encounter and starting over. After several tossing back-and-forth, we may just get an item with normal stats. Nowadays it is so hard for people repeating the routine over and over again; in addition,we can’t be sure whether we will get an equipment drop, and even sometimes you get a poor roll point and miss it.
The fun of leveling and dungeons? This process tends to become some kind of mechanized operations. As the pace of life is increasing, people become less patient. They can’t enjoy their slow leveling time, hardly enjoy the scenarios once they loved… Instead, they tend to care about awards for finishing missions…
So accumulating joys of MMORPGs tends to be cumbersome under that situation. They turn over and start to play MOBA and single player games which prove to be highly efficient.
Maybe one day, MMORPG achieve the dream of making every hour fulfilling, I can eventually gather all my old brothers gone -- those who had fought with in virtual world; and go back to MMORPGs, again.

They usually lose something on the MMORPG, rage quit and never play again.

I think level grinding is indeed a really big problem. That's what I hate about MMORPGs. You have to grind, grind and grind, and it takes weeks to have a character fully leveled. I just don't have the time and patience for that. I also hate how MMORPGs like WoW are really freaking expensive etc... I mean come on. But level grinding is really the biggest problem for me.

I play Guild Wars 2 and it doesn't feel time consuming at all. Personally spend most of my time in World vs World (a 3-way server PvP battle with big fights, towers, siege and all). I had to put it down when I was super busy, but when I wanted to go and get my fix, I could do so with no grinding needed.

I guess other MMOs have a vertical progression which is capped in this game, which probably is what gives you that feel that you gotta spend time to be up to date, and probably makes you wanna return no more.

But in the end, I think it's just a matter of time. Most people can't play more than a few hours of each game. MMOs are built so you play them for years :P. It is quite insane if you think about it.

I actually get extremely bored with them very fast. They all have the same feel to quests... as if you are running errands for someone else.

Go talk to some NPC over there
Get his grocery list. He needs 3 cactus fruit.
Spend a stupid amount of time fighting through enemies you aren't strong enough for, to collect his fruit.
Go back and give him his fruit.
Get some money and a lame item.
Lather rinse repeat.

I simply don't get anything out of doing things like this, and very rarely does it even matter if you have someone else with you. Often it feels like the game would be exactly the same if it became a single player with and against NPC's.
An MMO where teamwork becomes a crucial and exciting part to exploring the world would be amazing. I don't just mean ganging up for boss fights either.. something deeper. Not only that, but a storyline and "quests" that don't feel quite so trivial would be nice too. Even just something unique would make a difference... I've grown tired of the tank-rogue-mage cliche.

I think my mate hit the nail on the head when he said.
"Its just about chasing bigger numbers, and that gets boring."

However what i feel keeps players in mmo's is legacy, the amount of time invested usually is a hard thing to let go.
