Post news Report RSS Slaughter Cats Devlog #1 - 3 Years of Game Dev

This devlog covers my solo indie dev journey; showing the 3 years of work i have put into developing Slaughter Cats. Initially starting out in Unity over 4 years ago and then eventually transitioning to Unreal Engine and showing the progress i have made to get to where my indie game project is today.

I started my game around 4 years ago in Unity after loving playing beat'em ups and co-op games and always thought there wasn't enough good co-op games available. I'd always had a pretty good technical ability having grown up around computers, doing a degree in computing and also working in the IT sector for over 10 years, I'd also played a huge amount of games over the past 30 years and developed a few small games at university for assignments so thought i'd have a good background for creating a decent game.

I took alot of inspiration from castle crashers and golden axe and wanted to develop something similar although i did want to add in platforming to try and mix up the gameplay a bit as this was always another genre of games i really enjoyed.

After many months i realised the 2.5D nature of the game i'd developed didn't work well for platforming due to depth perception and the art really wasn't great so i gradually stopped developing the project further and eventually gave up. After several months i decided to retry in Unreal Engine with a fully 3D approach. After a few months i saw my project take shape and could see potential in my project.... I'm now almost 2 years into development in Unreal Engine and happy with the results so far, i think it's still probably going to require almost 2 years more work maybe more but am optimistic in the direction the game is going. I intend to release the game on PC first through Steam (possibly on Steam Deck also) and then hopefully at some point on Xbox and then Playstation.

I go over in more detail all the steps i've made to get where my project is today in the below video with footage of my projects and the development throughout the process:
