Post news RSS New Environments, Sounds, Enemies, and Obstacles in Sprout's Tale

We present new particle and lighting effects a new fire enemy and a an early take on a snow area.

This week has been great for progress all around. Mihai's got a lot of new sounds in and working, which means we can now hear footsteps and trees growing and vines growing and rain falling and so on and so forth. The simple addition of footstep sounds alone has made a huge difference to the game and genuinely makes a scene feel a lot more alive, so I'm very happy with that.

He did run into a speck of trouble with the tree growth as we have to decide how to handle the sounds running if the player stops mid-growth and then starts again. Does the growing sound pick up where it left off? But then the tree also shrinks back down when it is not being used so we have a new problem where the sound will no longer match to what the tree is doing.

But I digress. I want to show you generally what we've been working on so let's talk about environments. Most of what I've been able to do has just been a kind of rough experimentation, since we're still lacking enough asset variety to properly tackle full scenes. Still, I managed to get some decent looking bits together, I think.

Nice leafy particle effect

The light dims as Sprout enters the cave.

Very early experimentation with snow areas

I've also made good progress on getting through the Wind level, which won't be playable in the demo unfortunately (but you will see it in the trailer.)

Here's a look at about the midway point on the demo level/ Not visible here are the clouds, vines, and trees needed to complete the level or clear obstacles.

And in case you missed it, here is the finished fire enemy model and animation. This enemy burns the grass that Sprout creates and can burn down trees. Needless to say, fire is harmful our robed protagonist.
