Stopped by the CryENGINE 3 booth @ GDC and scored the full press pack.

Posted by on

A few days ago, I questioned the announcement of CryENGINE 3 at GDC given how new CryENGINE 2 is. It is clear now that Crytek's focus has shifted to the consoles, with their new engine rendering well on the 360 and PS3. Don't believe me? See the video below:

From the looks of it they haven't skimped on quality by moving from PC-exclusive to console. So provided the SDK comes out for modders, this can only be a good thing as more and more companies adopt the engine provided by Crytek. Full details in their PDF release for those that like reading long spec documents.

What are your thoughts now that you have seen it?

Crytek had to do it because the pc gamers were pirating crysis + warhead to the point where they were losing money. Making games for consoles is the only way for crytek to stay in business.

while Crysis was pirated alot, they still turned a profit from the games... Crytek just wants to see its sales figures up with Halo and other console FPS games thus they moved to consoles

I guess they just showed the console engine. Maybe the CT3 engine for the PC is different.

Nope, CryEngine 3 is mad for consoles, they are looking at different markets, probably it will be the best console engine so many games will use it.

its for pc too, and being greatly optomized it should look better than CE2, though i guess no one can really tell how much better since they havent shown us

Looks amazing, but it scares me that major engine developers like unreal and crytek are shifting focus to consoles and forgetting that PCs are alot more powerful and versatile.

I agree, but as long as there are users on PC there will be platforms to develop games for on it. We'll have to trust the indie devs. :-D

Well it's not necessarily a bad thing, PC tech is moving too fast and the devs are letting innovative ideas on the side track and mostly make generic copies of the same gameplay. With this we will get a solid cross-platform engine, with lower requirements that more people can play and mod for.

Indeed but recently I've been feeling like a second-class citizen if you will. There has been a large number of console-only games recently while all major PC games get ports released same day, while any console to Pc port is usually horribly bugged or delayed (usually 6 or 12 months).

I guess I'm just a console-hater, :(

The current situation with PC gaming is hundred times better than it was a couple of years ago. Almost all the major games come to PC as well when a few years ago almost all games that were cross-platform were PS3/X360 only and today we get games like Prototype,Batman Arkham Asylum, Fallout3, Guitar Hero, the new Prince of Persia etc. - all this stuff would be almost definitely console-exclusive 3 years ago. Plus not all of the games are 'console ports', e.g. you can't say that Oblivion or Fallout3 or COD:WAW are console-ports, they're true to life cross platform games.

I think the word most used in their description is "scalable". Everything is scalable to no end, even character detail. You can actually see that scalability in the video, as in the °360 version some background foliage is missing.
I think what becomes very clear is that the engine is meant to be fast to develop with and easy to use. It really depends on how well the components like the vehicle creator work. If really that little code is involved and it still works well,it will be a great engine for modding - for consoles too, maybe! (waiting on anouncements about that part)

My thoughts exactly. If the engine is designed to be scalable, doesn't that mean that it can go as high or low as the dev can/wants to push it? If thats the case I don't see where the problem is as long as the PC community continues to recieve support.

I'm glad to see it's on PS3 and 360. Not because I want to buy games for those consoles but because it should be much, much more playable on a mainstream gaming PC compared to the CryEngine 2.

Hey Chesty, i've seen you on Facepunch !

Well, pretty impressive for a console engine, still it's far beyond the PC capacities. And also it looks exactly like Cryengine 2, on medium/high, not even very high.
I think they should have called it CryEngine 2.5 or something like that.

Don't you mean far beyond a consoles capabilities? I yawn at Crysis on max settings 1280x1024 on my $1,800 dollar PC.

It doesn't hurt you in any way that they'll release console-versions.

I think the article's assertion of a shift of focus to consoles is premature at best. CryTek have always been highly PC-minded, so EXTENDING their engine to very large markets (i.e. home consoles) does not necessarily signal an end or even a diminution for PC support by the company.

Just try using the much-vaunted (and superb) WYSIWYP functionality without a mouse and keyboard for an example of the company's core focus - the development of easy-to-use, versatile and powerful software.

Seriously, this story would have been far more sensible if it had avoided editorialising.

Some people are never satisified. When Crysis cameout there was a huge stink because the graphics were too taxing on most PC's. Now they are focusing on making Cryengine 3 more versatile by adding new features and making its graphics very scalable, but now they are full of **** because they aren't releasing another title that totals our pc's?

These people need to makeup their minds already. Shame on the devs for giving everyone what they wanted eh?

Don't worry. CryEngine is always DEAD ON ARRIVAL.
Crappy modding support, crappy SDK and tools.
Look @ CryMod dot COM forums. How much problems people have with it.
Editor is so unstable, it crashes once in 15 minutes while wasting all your efforts.
Material and model systems are complicated and silly. Many stupid conditions for compiling stuff.
Its 5 years since FarCry. How much mods it got?(Well FarCry at least got STABLE editor, lol)

Perhaps now things will be different...

It's also a bit disturbing that whoever wrote the description didn't bother to mention that CryEngine 3 is also for PCs. Which also kind of makes me laugh a bit, seeing as consoles can't support DX10, and when it only mentions X360 and PS3, is kinda funny.

And I get what the person talking about how they liked CryEngine 2 being PC-Exclusive. It's like UE3. While yes, there are a good deal of games for PC on UE3, there are also quite a few that are console only, plus others that take quite a while to get a port to PC. Might the same not happen to CryEngine 3?

The physics seemed accurate but perhaps too accurate. I forever had objects infinitely bouncing around amongst other objects, making a hell of a lot of noise. That was really annoying.

Well it looks like the Crytek has accomplished environmental realism. Now I want to see some realistic AI! Seeing an enemy get shot from a distance and watching him turn around not knowing what the hell is going on while he continuously gets shot at is simply not good enough.

I really think it's time for Crytek to boost their support to the community to encourage more modding, too.

I saw this video in college, both me and my mates agreed that the real time version of Crysis on PS3/360 is balls compared to PC, it was slowing down quite alot. Well from what we saw anyways,

I REALLY hope they dont consider the next Crysis to be multiplatform, otherwise i'll RAGE! Crysis is one of those games you can marvel about to your friends as its near impossible to play on a medium built machine at max graphics lol, even my rig cant handle TOP TOP Graphics.
