Torque 3D

Engine review

Overview:
Aging engine with a strong legacy that is still being developed. Efforts are moving slowly and steadily toward a new 4.0 version (being worked on part-time, voluntarily, by a small team of programmers). Could really use more help in that effort.

Tools:
Great world editing tools with many features missing in even current AAA options. This is one of T3D's strongest features, to me.

License:
Another is that it's MIT licensed, which means you can do whatever you want with it. No strings attached. No licensing or royalty fees. No hidden catches.

Programming/Code:
I'm not a programmer, so I can't speak to the code. There is a C-like scripting language called TorqueScript that allows you to do quite a bit without touching the source code itself.

Community:
So here's the huge, glowing wart on T3D. Its community. Or rather, lack of one.

There's forums, but only maybe 5 people ever post there, and there can be looong stretches of inactivity between responses, if there's any at all.

The real issue, though, is an incredibly hostile and arrogant individual whom makes posting there a true test of one's patience and faith in humanity. Wouldn't surprise me if they're the main reason more people don't post there. Since they're "admin" of their own game section, you can't mute or block them. I tried. As of me typing this, the Mods acknowledge the problem, but do nothing meaningful to address it, or rein them in. So, this angry individual pretty much has run of the place.

For now, all things considered, I'd recommend it, but with a mind to what I stated above. Check out the engine, but stay away from the forums if you can help it - at least for now.
