Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae

Game review

If you like fast-paced and satisfying combat, this game definitely has you covered. It took me a little bit to get used to the mechanics (holy moves and counters in particular) and unlock some of the better moves, but once you get the hang of it, it really does flow amazingly well.

As long as you don't mind that it's on the short side (given the presence of new game+, it's clearly meant for multiple playthroughs...) and is literally nothing but combat (ok, there's also ~5 total minutes of cinematics too...), I think you'll probably enjoy it. If you enjoy games like Devil May Cry and Croixleur, and catch this on sale, I definitely recommend it.

Freedom Fall

Game review

I've gotta say, I was actually quite impressed with how much I enjoyed playing through this. The mechanics are solid (even if a couple like the wall jump were slightly awkward at first), and the level design is varied enough to keep it from getting stale.

As for the story and presentation, I like the general art style used, and telling the story through writing on the walls was a really nice touch - different, but very effective.

The only reason I took off two points was for the length - I could literally have gotten to the end in one sitting had I not played just a few levels at a time. There are some challenges to go back for, but even taking that into account, the total amount of content is still a bit lacking. However, the content that is there is excellent so I still give this a recommendation overall, especially if you catch it on sale like I did.

In short, if you're looking for an enjoyable downward-scrolling 2d platformer with a neat storytelling mechanic, definitely give Freedom Fall a look.

EvilQuest

This is very heavily influenced by the NES classic Crystalis (a Zelda-like game) and that's definitely not a bad thing. If you like old-school top-down action-adventure games this is definitely worth a shot.

Bunny Must Die!

Game review

This is a very solid "Metroidvania" game - plenty of exploration and bosses that are tough but generally not cheap. The one and only downside is that the controls can take a little getting used to, but once you do they get the job done.

Bleed

The action is intense and the price is right for it's relatively short length. If you like platform shooters I definitely recommend giving this a shot.

Game review

It plays exactly like one of the really good NES games that still hold up fairly well today. If it had been released in the late 80's this probably would have done very well.

Gameplay-wise it's somewhere between Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania, though the difficulty isn't "quite" as extreme as either of those two, it definitely presents a good challenge. Definitely recommended if you have fond memories of NES-era games.

Game review

There have been a lot of good shmups made over the years, but I'm not sure I can honestly say I've ever played one that tops this. In addition to solid arcade-style action it also packs ship customization, and even branching missions; extremely ambitious for a DOS game I've gotta say.
