I felt the same way.
The only thing that saved me was that my hero could summon mages and also had an item to occasionally raise the dead when attacking..
Spent over an hour on the map just to gather enough troops.
It is doable but will be frustrating!
Who knows, maybe I missed something?

I had similar issues, try this:
Run the protectors executable with administrator privileges. Then in game on the campaign screen you need to navigate to options and reset the campaign.
Also as the creator said, make sure to remove the protectors map in your documents and make a clean install

I used to think like you do.
Truth is, you have to learn the strategies in which to win the battles.
The dev team has given you different ways to win but if you build your character like a jackass, you'll get screwed.
