I consider it to be horror. The way things are filmed, how a lot of the sets are drenched in darkness with lights just barely illuminating everyone, or awash with a hellish red hue.

It highlights the decline into insanity, and how Willard is following the same path Kurtz did, becoming an emotionless killer. Nobody in the movie is heroic, almost everyone they meet on their journey is insane, and the crew themselves are slowly going crazy due to the sheer terror and violence they're experiencing. It's like being in a nightmare dreamscape.

One of the most unsettling scenes was when they stopped their boat at a bridge where heavy fighting was taking place. As they arrived, soldiers clambered through the water, trying to swim to them and be brought back home. They had been defending the bridge for weeks, and every time it was blown up by the VC they'd rebuild it over and over. Willard tries to find their commanding officer, but can't find anyone and nobody even knows who their CO is anymore. They're just stuck in a loop of death and anguish over and over, never to be relieved. To me, that's ******* horrifying.

My favourite movie. A true horror film, in every sense of the word.
