Cry of Fear

Game review

Rumpel and Minuit + their team did a fantastic job with this mod in terms of content and development, it's essentially a nice first person throwback to more old school survival horror games (Resident Evil, Silent Hill, etc.)

I personally liked the more old gritty looking visuals that CoF offered (I personally think it's scarier when the mind helps to fill in the blanks that older graphics leave)

The audio aspect of this mod is great, audio is a big factor in determining whether or not a survival horror game is scary, and CoF accomplished this with spades. Guns sound powerful and it's pretty unnerving to hear the monsters. The voice acting is hit or miss but it does have a strange appeal, after all the original voice acting in Silent Hill 2 was god awful but people (including I) loved it

The gameplay itself, it ranges from "holy **** this is awesome" to "i ******* hate this game". The randomized spawns and combat can help explain this thought. At its best I had moments where I was complementing whether or not I should use my last 2 9mm bullets to combat a few monsters or if I should attempt to avoid them with quick running and stealth; if I engaged in combat it was intense trying to fight them up close with the melee weapons and guns, and generally there was a reward (more ammo or health, no enemies when you backtrack, etc.)

At its worst it turns into "Instant Death: The Game" when you're forced down through extremely narrow corridors with no chance on avoiding the enemy (which are extremely fast), and having to fight said enemy with a crappy switchblade and with so little health, any hit on you is a 1 hit kill. When the game introduces firearm wielding creatures, the combat with those guys is pretty frustrating with the high gun recoil. It's not so bad against enemies that don't have guns or 100% accuracy/hitdetecion. Granted I played on Difficult.

In conclusion it's a great mod but it can turn people off with its difficulty and old school gameplay elements.

E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy

Game review

I got this game on sale for $2 on Steam; I think it's a wonderful game (I tend to like non-linear shooters) with the amount of choice it gives you but that's all overwhelmed by the horrible translation and User Interface design

I didn't know what was going on, or what I was supposed to do, or why I should care for this and that; the game does give you a lot of text and dialogue to sift through but it left me with more questions than answers (shoddy english translation) and by the end I just ignored the story and shot things to death

As for the UI design, it's extremely vague and clunky; I didn't know how to hack right, the inventory management felt awkward, I didn't know how the researching worked, and so on

In this case I would've consulted the video tutorials already present in the game but again they're poorly translated and were a chore to go through (I tried to find a manual for the game but there isn't one?)

A game's story is one of the selling points of any Role Playing game, and in E.Y.E's case they shot that out the window with subpar translation and delivery (sifting through pages of text isn't exactly fun to do in 2011) and as a consequence the game in general is extremely confusing (the video tutorials seldom help at all).

But at least I enjoyed it for what its worth for $2, fun game with nice shooting mechanics

This game is really good if your commander knows what s/he's doing, if not it's really frustrating
