I've had the same issue I think (though I don't know how to check the startup log). I tried a re-download and instead of crashing on loading the first map element ("Loading Water Effects" etc) it zipped straight through to "Done!"... and then crashed to desktop :(
I don't have great WiFi connection where I am right now, so maybe it's not downloading well due to that (takes me around 4hrs to download).
However, in general I'd like to say bravo to you for your hard work, and I hope to get it working in the future...
