I think it's also that they have a black outline. I did a few tests without them. But the colours need to be tweaked otherwise there isn't enough contrast between the terrain and the players

I can run the Game with 512Mb Ram and a GeForce4 MX420, which also doesnt have a pixel shader.
On the setup screen, i have display mode 800x600x32, no antialias, no triple buffer and no post processing. Sure, it doest have the cool shader effects but is still very playble :P
