Something like this remake would work great, assuming the creator is onboard with supporting the project. Just listen to that rendition of the missile silo!
But many actions that brings the experience closer to an ideal remake incurs legal risk, even if nothing in that soundtrack remake samples from the original. I think it's potentially worth it (at least as a mod), given that significant risk has already been taken with the project's name, and given that the soundtrack is a remake.
If not, then mod support at the very least could help with that, if there's time in the project to integrate a mod plugin such as mod.io.
