No, the game is online multiplayer only, as the game system promotes quick decisions and fast turns, and play by email would have been a step in the other direction.

The Alpha is still low scale distribution and is more to get feedback from interested players. We are only present on Desura and our website and have low scale PR, which explains the low numbers. At Beta we will be distributing keys through gaming sites and at release we will be on Steam and other platforms, which should increase the user base substantially.

We still intend to release a pre order alpha for everyone, we just needed to polish the game a bit for the experience to be as good as possible. We had a couple of issues with animations and Unity 3.4, but things are better now.

Thanks, we have iterated quite a lot to get there, and it looks a bit busy on this screen because of the open popup and the different feebacks, but it is cleaner when in game. We have a news associated with it but it hasnt been approved yet...

Sure thing mate, it will be shown in the trailer and we will make another video that will show all the locations in depth.

Yeah, we loved the idea of the treepod design as it fit perfectly with our idea of AROS, and how they would rather have a synthetic tree rather than have organic ones. The version showed here is the first version we designed based on the concepts, but we since then have created 5 or six different versions with different heights or number of branches to add some variety.

Unity Pro, but most of our shaders weren't activated for those screens (only glow and anti aliasing), so the final look should be better, at least in terms of color calibration and feel. We are also missing a lot of props in the scene (hence a lot of empty space) since our 3D artists are currently working on the level design.

BrainCandy - - 141 comments @ Fray: New Screenshots and some news about Alpha.

We will be launching a pre-order Alpha this October, similar to what Overgrowth or Minecraft did before us. You will have access to the first 3 maps, 2 factions, 70% of weapons and equipement. We will then be updating the game weekly to include all the features we intend, following a calendar you can track :)

You are right Hell_Diguner, it would be contrary to our fast paced design. Sorry Paxton, although I agree with you, in real life it would be quite fragile, in Fray, it can take a severe beating ;)

True! The similarities are due to the pistons on the gun, that we added for the industrial look and the general purpose of the weapon. You like it?

I think that your calculation is off because you take into account every cube in the map. All objects in the scene are hollow, probably using Sparse Voxel Octree which greatly reduces the size of the data storage, by conserving only the data of the objects that can be seen.

Or so I think, could be very wrong...

This could possibly push Intel to further develop their Larrabee Project (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larrabee_(microarchitecture)) which is a GPGPU that could really help with the kind of calculations needed for Voxel rendering, as well as solve the lighting issues with realtime raycasting.

Fun times :D

But as for the technology presented, it has currently no use unless you want an incredible looking static scene without any Ambient Occlusion, Lighting effects and movable objects...

But they are paving the way for new render engines that will be available in the upcoming years.

Thanks guys, we are really pouring our souls into this project, trying to create something fun and original.

Fray will be a standalone game for PC and Mac. You'll probably be able to get it from Desura, Gamersgate, our website and maybe Steam.

A turn lasts as long for all players, however they play at the same time. When all the players have finished or the timer has run out, then the action takes place and you can see if your strategy and anticpation managed to trump your enemy!

Yeah sorry about that... 2 reasons behind the compression issue, it isn't the final mix and moddb seems to compress sound when it is sent... Final quality will be much clearer :-)

Well, set up is (relatively) easy, but the camera system costs a lot of money, especially if you want good quality. At Quantic Dream's studio they have 64 cameras, each one with 16 Megapixel resolution. That is probably a few million euros in itself. Then they have the roomspace, the props, and the knowhow. Sure you could set up a 4 camera system for a much smaller price (5-10k dollars), but you would never get that kind of detail and quality.

So... Was worth it? Definetly!
