Description

Toad On Fire is an action-adventure shooter. You play as Smokey, a toad armed with a flamethrower, and take the offensive against an invading force of hostile frogs. You progress through 25+ levels of varying types, ranging from fast-paced action to casually-paced puzzles to fierce boss battles. Along the way, you collect loot, which you can use to purchase useful items, such as armor and potions that upgrade your character. Cutscenes push the story forward as you play.

History

You could say this is technically a sequel to a game I made a long time ago called "Toadman 2: Space Shock". It was released online for free way back in 2000, but that was a very primitive game, nothing like Toad On Fire. But Toad On Fire's original title was "Toadman 3".

After Toadman 2, right away I wanted to make the next game in the series. Whereas the previous two were minigames focused on two-player / 1v1, battles, I wanted the next one to focus on the single-player experience.

After many abandoned attempts and prototypes for the third game, I did manage to program a prototype in 2009 that felt good to play and like something I could build out into a full game.

Though, I didn't expect it to take 10+ years to release. The game grew very much over that time and it doesn't resemble the original games anymore, thus part of the reason for the name change to "Toad On Fire".

But I still kept the lore from the old games, the history of the toads battling each other in space, etc., and added to that -- so it still functions as a sequel, but you don't need to know anything about the previous games, so it also functions as a stand-alone game in the series.
