It's time for another devlog for our upcoming game, "The Fisherman".


Welcome back to our devlog series for The Fisherman! In this seventh article, we're excited to share the progress we've made in several areas, including post-processing and lighting, the introduction of our first cutscenes, the development of new fisherman characters, and the creation of a new water shader for our fishing minigame. Let's dive right in!


Post-processing and Lighting ⛵

To further elevate the visual quality of The Fisherman, we've implemented postprocessing and lighting techniques in Unity. Postprocessing effects like color grading, bloom, depth of field, and ambient occlusion have been carefully calibrated to enhance the atmosphere and mood of the game. Lighting plays a crucial role in establishing the right ambiance, and we've employed dynamic lighting solutions to create realistic and captivating scenes.

First Cutscenes 🎬

As The Fisherman is a narrative-driven game, we understand the importance of engaging storytelling experiences. In this update, we are thrilled to introduce the first cutscenes in Maria da Glória. These cinematic sequences offer players deeper insights into the social dynamics within the fishing vessel.

Please note that the cutscene we are about to show you serves as an initial test, where we are evaluating various elements such as character positioning, dialog system, animations, and other important factors. Through this test, we aim to refine the visual presentation, pacing, and overall effectiveness of our cutscenes.

Characters 🧔

The fisherman characters are an integral part of The Fisherman, and we've been hard at work creating unique and memorable individuals. Each character has a distinct personality, backstory, and role within the fishing community of Maria da Glória. We've focused on capturing the essence of the time period, ensuring that their appearance, mannerisms, and dialogue align with the historical context. We can't wait for players to meet these characters and develop a connection with them as they explore the world of The Fisherman.

To streamline the development process, we created two base models in Blender, which we then customized by adding different beards and eye colors to create additional variations. This approach allowed us to efficiently create five distinct fisherman characters while maintaining visual variety and preserving development resources.

Fishing minigame (New water shader) 🎣

Our fishing minigame has received a new update, a brand-new water shader. We've incorporated advanced water simulation techniques to provide a more realistic and immersive fishing experience. This enhancement adds an extra layer of visual fidelity and realism to the fishing minigame, making the gameplay more engaging and captivating.
