Quatre Windows game

It all started when I watched the movie The Cube which turned out to be one of my favorite psychological horror movie. Ever since, I wanted to make a game that was inspired by it, but I didn't know anything about game development and didn't think I would be able to create one since it is so difficult to make a great pc game. However, I just decided to start with Unity and apply some of my programming knowledge that I learned and still am learning in school and went with it. It might not be the greatest game ever, but it is at least a start which I've had a lot of fun making.

Game Development

At first I thought I would complete this game project in a week or so since it is just placing several cubic rooms which have traps and a player. Little that I knew, it's much more than that and it took me 4 months especially with balancing school and work. I didn't have a plan or a well written story so I just went and designed the rooms in blender and then exported all in Unity. Then I put all the lightning and placed about 24 rooms just to test. It was a mess and extremely slow and so i decided to place the rooms bits by bits instead of all at once.

After I designed the traps and placed them in some rooms, I kinda was lost with what to do next since I didn't have a story really. Therefore I left that project for about 2 months just to rethink of what I'm trying to do. Then recently, I begin to reconsider this project and decided to finish what I started no matter what. So I went back and drew a storyboard to get things organized. I came up with a little story which became more of a therapy for me. I envisioned the player as of someone that is going through obstacles, and the only thing that kept him going is the idea that there is an end to all of that which is represented by the exit that the player is seeking. In order to get to that exit, the player has to trust his gut feeling and the little resources that is in his possession and try to go to a room that is either trapped or safe which is what life is.

I spent the last few weeks fixing bugs and optimizing more the game with some features such as a timer that will let the player know how long the traps are disabled in a room to give him time to escape.

Quatre synopsis

You're playing as Kadi, a game developer, who one day came back home after a long day at work. She decided to work more on a cube game project that one of her friend asked to help him finish. As she was working on it, she blinked once and found herself in the game. She doesn't know if she's in a dream or if it's real. The game she is in consists of several cubical rooms that are trapped. To reach an exit that she assumes there is, she has to avoid the trapped rooms by throwing objects to trigger the traps. Let's see how long you'll survive and find the exit.
