Thanks so much for reading. This is my first devlog so I’ll use it as a catch up and a little background introduction.

Outwith is about exploration and immersion with interesting characters and exciting first-person combat.

The team is one person myself - I’m doing all the coding and design in my spare time. I’m using Unity and assets for the environment and character models.

I’ve been developing the game for around 18 months now. It’s gone through a bunch of different iterations and complete overhauls before reaching its current state.

The plan is to keep improving the free demo on Itch.io until it gains sufficient interest. At that point I’ll turn on donations and once it goes beyond demo it will be paid for.

I’m really looking forward to hearing your feedback - especially around combat. Anything you can think of - don’t hesitate to comment or reach out in any way, no matter how small.

The demo scene uses the Unity default terrain size of 1km x 1km. There’s a small village with NPCs giving basic quests, some enemy encounters and some linked caves which are separate scenes. My plan is to keep iterating over the core mechanics within the demo scene. Once this is ready the world and the story can be extended outward by adding more linked scenes.

Here’s some highlights of what’s been added over the past few weeks. It doesn’t cover everything but from now on I’m hoping to post regular release notes and progress updates.

  • Uploaded a Youtube trailer: Outwith Trailer
  • There’s now an alchemy table in the village - it’s pretty basic but there’s one alchemy formula to discover which will create a health potion.
  • I just finished another round of UI bug fixes but if you see anything or if anything gets on your nerves let me know and I’ll prioritize fixing it.
  • On that note there’s controller support but some of the UI may not be fully working
  • Some recent fixes to the Inventory - stacking should now work
  • Dual wielding with the sword.
  • Dialogue is still largely placeholder but the NPCs will give you stuff to do in the form of basic quests.
  • The caves work in terms of entering and exiting but there isn’t much in them yet apart from a few skeletons to fight and some water.
  • If you find a campsite you can sleep for a few hours. At the moment it doesn’t do anything but the sky looks pretty.
  • Started adding some SFX
  • Refining and improving enemy AI some of them may still swing and miss but should be much improved and still lots to do there - anything amiss let me know either message me or leave a comment.
  • Saving and loading a game is also wip - it will currently save the player’s location, inventory and quest journal. Enemy spawns, time of day and a few other things are not yet saved.

Don’t forget - a free demo of the game is available to download and play on Itch.io Starsbetweenthestars.itch.io

And make sure to comment with feedback - until next time.
