#5 Devlog Of Maeldor (Characters-Pelethorn)

Welcome to the #5 Devlog of Maeldor (Characters-Pelethorn) and now we have come to my favorite character and also the main character of the short stories I’ve been writing, which takes place in Maeldor. He is the source of joy and courage in our fellowship, a natural outcome of his naive personality, our beloved Water Elf, Pelethorn. Oh how I love this character!

Are you excited to learn more about him? If so, grab your coffee and let’s get started!

BLESSED CHILD

Alright, first thing first. Who is he?

He is a water elf, who is blessed with the “Water Soul Summoning” ability, by the divine lake of Neni, when he was just a baby. It is a very old tradition to wash a newborn baby in the waters of the Divine Lake of Neni and on rare occasions, sometimes a part of the lake binds its soul to the baby, surrounding him/her body like a blanket or a cover, and when this happens, it means that the baby is born with the “Water Soul Summoning” ability. I will not tell all his background story since it is a bit too long, and you can actually read it on the Book 1 / Chapter 2, if interested. In my perspective, he is such a unique character and I believe there are so many people who can relate themselves with his thoughts and personality, just like I do.

WATER SOUL SUMMONER

Alright that is enough info about his story, now let’s talk about his part in the game. If you are familiar with my game and have been following my devlogs, you must be already familiar with that, every character in my game has 4 type of skills, and this is also valid for Pelethorn. He has 1 fast attack (Punch & Kick), 1 heavy attack (Water Hammer), 1 defensive ability (Water Shield) and 1 ultimate ability (Flood). Other than that, he can also “Dash” like all other playable characters but since he has magic based abilities, instead of Stamina, he has Mana as the source of his powers.

And what is special or different about him? I think you already guessed it but if you haven’t let me ask you this, do you see that little blue fellow floating around Pelethorn? Well, that is his famous “Water Soul”, and while in normal occasions Pelethorn is not a strong or skilled warrior, thanks to his Water Soul he becomes pretty dangerous to his enemies. Because his Water Soul can change it’s shape and become more solid or form a protective shield around him, also can heal Pelethorn while he is inside the shield, and even draw the waters hidden around them and create a flood!

SKILLS & ABILITIES

So let’s talk about his fast attacks first. These are also combo kind of attacks, like Turmaeg, but instead of a sword, he uses his Water Soul to “Punch & Kick” his enemies. His Water Soul covers his fists and kicks, becomes more solid and with the momentum makes the impacts much more stronger, without letting Pelethorn to hurt himself (which he normally would, if he’d hit them with his barehands, hehe).

His second attack is called “Water Hammer”, and as you can guess from the name, his Water Soul takes the shape of a hammer, and falls down upon his enemies with a great momentum, dealing more damage and also dazing enemies for a short amount of time. Like Turmaegs’ heavy attack, this attack is also slower yet has a feature, and also consumes Mana.

His special ability is called “Water Shield”, and again I believe you can guess pretty much what is this skill from the naming. It is the only defensive ability he has. With this ability, his Water Soul surrounds him like a shield, covering and protecting him from any incoming damage. And of course, this skill also consumes Mana, since we don’t want him to cover himself forever. If you upgrade this skill, it can also heal him for a certain amount of HP, which is an obvious balancing decision I made while working on him, because after giving it a try for about a week, I thought that he was a bit much vulnerable regarding to other characters. So to balance things out, I decided to give this ability also a healing feature, but remember, it is only available after the first update of the Water Shield skill.

And his last skill… And also his ultimate, “Flood” is the skill I was most excited about to work on, not just because it was one of the most sophisticated function I’ve implemented into my game, but also it is the one that seemed to me as the coolest ability amongst all characters (sorry Turmaeg & Anoriel). As I’ve mentioned before, thanks to his Water Soul he can draw waters hidden around him, like from the depths of the earth or waters which is hidden inside the materials, to create a Flood and choke all the enemies in it. And the last thing I’d like to say about this skill is that it has a cooldown, shocking right? Hehe.

LAST WORDS

If you’ve read the short stories and learned more about Pelethorn, you might understand why I think that there are so many people out there who can relate themselves with him, because most of the time people who are close to us expect a lot from us and obviously, this creates a pressure within to satisfy their expectations, rather than fulfilling ourselves as a person in life. Pelethorn learned this after many failed experiences, but he finally understood that it is not about fulfilling other peoples expectations, but to finding your own path and living it, and I believe this is true for all of us. In that regard, he is a pretty special character for me.
