Hearts of Oak: Conquest of the Seas is a non-commercial PC game being developed by PiratesAhoy!, and is to become the historical seafaring game to end them all! Fun, realistic gameplay on land and at sea, set during the Age of Sail, will provide extensive free play, exciting scripted storylines and intense multiplayer scenarios.
Now this is what I'm talking about! This looks a lot more realistic!:) Excellent job! But a little critic hurts no one :p The way the smoke is propelled out of the muzzle is perfect don't change a thing on that! But the smoke itself has an odd shape. It's like multiple puffs being launched instead if a big cloud followed by a small trail that leads back to the muzzle. (https://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j150/thekurlyone/CannonFireSaturday-9309-1.jpg) A bit like that, just a very dense structure of clouds. I don't know if it's possible in the engine or that you just haven't got to that but it would put the cherry on top as it were! But overall excellent job and awesome that you respond so quickly to the community!
We will take all the criticism we can handle, it can only server to make the game better!
You are correct that it is multiple objects. We are working hard to get it to become more like one single cloud, the engine is working against us to some extent in that we have to make multiple particle effects to get the large cloud structure we want without the constant usage of one texture object (making them all look the exact same) and get them to blend together. The color of the cloud still needs a lot of tweaking but for now this is closer to the end result we are looking for. I doubt we will spend too many more hours on this as we have a full list of development to get done before our Tech Demo projected deadline.
Yeah, this is not an important factor. While perfection may at times lead to better results, it really tends to derail projects as well. I would move on from here :)
It looks absolutely great considering the stage of development you are at. I'd say scale the effect down by about 40% and it'd be more than great as a placeholder for future perfection.
Those are actually a good size. GUns back then put out horrendous amounts of smoke with full charges of powder.
To put things into perspective, I've gathered that the amount of black powder used in the following video was equal to the amount of powder in a single 32 pound long gun.
Holy **** if this is pre-alpha i can't even imagine how will open beta look :O
i remember in cutthroats pcgame that when the smoke drifted across the ship you gunners would not fire because of no sight line to the enemy
that game is still one of the best in my mind ships, land combat, trading with, capturing, ransoming towns, hostages, forcing the captured soldiers to fight on your ship as marines and a huge map
seriously with this game your making me dream of being able to do this all again.right in the childhood (without the limitations of using a rpg system ala AOP)
keep up the brilliant work
You should look at trying the Pirates of the Caribbean game with the PiratesAhoy! mod pack. It is an amazing build with almost all of the same features and upgraded graphics!
We hope to make this game have all of the same features and more. If you want to help out, even in small ways, head over to the PA! forums and see what needs to be done, we can always use more volunteers.
That game is part of my child hood, and you guys remade my childhood

Looks really good! I hope the windward ships have either accuracy penalties because of the smoke obscuring the target and/or has an effect in a hardcore mode (no exterior view of the ship)
Also, you called it a boat! I'm pretty sure at one point Aubrey got very angry for Maturin calling a ship a boat.
I can honestly say I love the good progress on this project. Good luck guys!
I hope you guys like building, cause i just got a new fresh supply of bricks.
Im loving what im seein :D
That shockwave effect coming off of the cannons is orgasmic! This looks awesome!
Will be included a graphic option to turn off the hot air effect when cannons shoot? (like Empire Total war and Napoleon Total War). It looks amazing, but I just dont like that "shockwave". I´ve seen old cannons firing but never seen that effect. Very good work though!!
This is an example of cannons shooting: Youtube.com
