What about tiles? In Edo Japan, the roads inside these large places consists of rocks rather than dirt road... And having these rocky areas in alleyways and such as pathway allows for footsteps to be heard better.

Great suggestion was looking through some other Feudal era games doing some more competitive analysis and came across this as a solution as well, I'm going to repaint the terrain from scratch over the next few days

I'm not really fond of that ninja look, ninjas had armor and there's no real proof that they did wear black (but if it has to be black then it should rather be all black than black and grey)
and the headgarment wouldn't sit that tight, it would be a bit more loose

anyways it looks great (except the grass :/)

All the research we've conducted as a team indicates ninja were scrappy, poor farmers often in scrappy clothing or had a similar look to the look we have. Of course we stylized our model to fit the art style of the game, however we are well aware because of how endeared ninja are conceptually it'll be impossible to please everyone's personal concept of what ninja should look like.

Our references come from many Stephen Turnbull samurai books (he's written around ten I believe.) Like Dragoon said if you have historically factual books please send a link on Amazon and perhaps in the future we'll revisit or have alternative customizable outfits for each class.
