Every 3,000 years the moon Ghar aligns with its mother planet, Uum, and a bridge is formed between the two entities. Refractors are the inhabitants of Ghar, and they have a faith built around this crossing and practice the ways of wielding, the technique of manipulating crystals with sheer will. A young wielder, Rowb, wakes to discover his home in ruins. His people have been reduced to ash.
