Battle of The Atlantic (BotA) is a Real Time Strategy game based in the North Atlantic during World War 2. The game allows the player to play out the battle from the side of the Axis, made up of Italy and Germany and the Allies, made up of Britain’s Royal Navy(RN), USA's United States Navy(USN) and Royal Canadian Navy (HMCN). The player has the opportunity to replay some of the decisive battles of the Atlantic War as well as create there own version of history in a dynamic campaign. I aim to create a historically accurate product without sacrificing fun, this is not designed as an arcade game but a deep strategy game that would push the thinking of both new and Experienced RTS players. The game experience would be centred around a 2d command map showing the Atlantic gaming area complimented by a 3d world which with the aid of static and 'Free' camera positions will enable the player to life a cinematic experience of the action as it plays out in front of them.

Ill let you all into a secret. I probably should have held back on adding a profile for this project to Moddb until I felt slightly happier I could definitely pull it off. I really wanted to get some testing arenas done before revealing this project to the public and although ive got several prototypes of certain aspects of my game design complete, none of them are in a fit state for public consumption as they are literally basic concept tests.

Another reason I dived into modDB now is because ive been sick the alst few weeks. Ive had my Appendix removed and have been recovering from that, which was followed up with a hematoma (blood clot under the incision which bled out) and now I have a large abscess on my back which was causing me a fever this time last week. But it seems im now on the mend and feeling a lot better, despite the lump on my back not really going down yet.

Basically I haven't been in the right mind to work out complex logic paths or coding for the last 3- 4 weeks . So thought id get the public side of things rolling so at least im moving the project forward in some way.

As you can imagine being quite an out going guy and having seen only 8 walls over the last few weeks (the 4 at home and the 4 at work) and not a single pub, its been getting to me a little bit. So I went and bought Codemasters racing game F1 2012 to cheer myself up, and now FIFA13 has arrived on my doormat as well,so I don't expect ill be getting a huge amount done over this weekend on the project.....just a word of warning ( Yes, I love my Sport as well as my history!)

Progress This Week.

  • That being said. Ive got another couple of ship models to go with the corvette just about complete(minus weapons!), which will probably make up next weeks post.
  • Ive prototyped a radar system which im happy with despite only having a small number of test variables (No actual sea or weather states for example).
  • The thing I'm really focusing on at the moment (apart from getting 100% fit again) is the UI on the main command map and ive raided the Unity Asset store yet again this week for a good solution to Unity's quite frankly piss poor efforts at a complete, user friendly and most importantly efficient UI system. More on that soon...

In the mean time Ive added a couple more weapon models to the Gallery:

  1. Early War Triple Torpedoe Tubes found on the ‘Town' Class of Destroyers
  2. 20mm Single Oerlikion

Can You Help?

Every so often im going to put this on then bottom of a post so people can throw up suggestions on how to solve any particular problem, this might be technical, programmatical , historical or design related.

This weeks issue I really want to get nailed is as follows:-

The main command map is currently made up of 16 tiles, each with a textured of 2048. However when I zoom in nice and close, the 2048 isn't really high res enough and blurs quite alot around coast lines and the like.
The map itself has been created by taking screenshots from googlemaps and piecing them together. But this can only go so far. Namely the res of my monitor which is hardly top of the range these days (hell my computer is 7 years old!) .
How can I go about making the coastlines sharper?

As always if you have any questions or comments drop me a line and thanks for watching (all 10 of you)

Take Care,
John
