Description

An adventurer with a yearning to explore the inaccessible, misty world of magic hears a tale of a door that opens onto that world, located in a lost city; she embarks on a journey to discover the city and its door, and enter the mist-world. In her journey she will climb, explore, discover, and fight through desolate and dangerous places, seeking out the threads that might lead her to A Door to the Mists.

History

The project that would become A Door to the Mists started out rather larger: an "adventuring simulator", with semi-open gameplay, a wide variety of levels, and separate "regions" (read: hubs) in which levels could be found, and between which the player could travel.

This, however, was rather too big, given various constraints. So some scaling back was done, and, after at least one false start, the story of A Door to the Mists was found.

(The setting wasn't new--Ian had previous written a short story set there. While somewhat geographically removed, that story shares some elements with the game--including entry to the mist-world being an important plot-point.)

With a reduced (but still somewhat... ambitious) scope, a new story, and an interesting setting, Ian set about building A Door to the Mists. And so it has gone for the past few years, and so the game has slowly built up into what it is today.

Features

  • Traversal and exploration, with universal mantling
  • Puzzle-solving, both in-level and minigame
  • Sparse combat, one-on-one against a variety of foes
