THIS.... it bothers me how it has gotten to the point where even though many mods are not their own IP's (even in TC's) yet many modders that bassicly make modules, textures, or skins from other games, movies, or even for the mod in question suddenly slap on "I made this reskin from something else from scratch and its mine now" card so now no one can use it...

I want to make very clear I am not trying to devalue the work going into making mods, mod assests, or even the codding under the hood... but if your mod is for an IP you do not even own... why are you claiming you own it if all you did was just copy it from somewhere else?

Honestly I wish more mod leads would enforce open source from the get go of there projects and make it clear that all assets are to allowed to be used (with credit) after the mod is release or in the event of of abandonment.

I am getting tired of people acting like they own the rights to things that are in many cases just copies of a copyrighted IP they do not own.

What bothers me even more then the "Rise of Pretty Shiny Things" for modding are the following two points.

1. the sheer amount of mod authors that abandon their work but then the community around the game or mod stoping others from wanting to continue it for "respecting their work"

2. Mod authors insisting that no one else can touch there work and then going after others that do something simmiler even though their "work" is technically not even theres due to modding SOMEONE ELSE"S IP.

Again I will not name any names but the elitist attitude that attitude that is becoming more common amongst Modders plus the quantity of mods expanding more along with the rising rate of mod abandonment is making me very concerned about the future of the modding community in the long-run.

That concern mainly be with the comming "Games as a Service" model, payed mods, and some EULA's dictating what you can and can not mod... I fear it may be a matter of time before some company will try to force a community standard on there modding community that will try to cliam abandoned mods and sneak in a clause that no modder owns the work they make.

Glad to see some updates for this; this mod is the reason I bought Freelancer II. :D

I am curious about the first 3 portraits on the top row and the last two on the bottom right. are the former related to Cornerian Defence Force? or are they another factions. as for the latter I have no clue as thier foods and gas mask seems more like a desert/ pirate orgion then any of the other factions I know of.

Anyway; looking forward to more of your work and thanks for all your efforts.

Unfortunately I am going to have to agree to disagree with you on this one sir; they should have sent a C&D to modding when it first came out for GTA III instead of now.

it would have been frustrating at the time but by ignoring it and allowing a community to grow for 10 years; guess what? they allowed the majority of their paying community that keeps them in business to as their silence was an endorsement that this was okay.

By ignoring it for this long and choosing now after 10 years with games like San Andreas, IV, and V to have award winning mods for them increase the sales and life span of these games; they have practically shot them selves in the foot and alienated the majority of their customers AND creators like GooD-NTS to have 10 years of their creativity and time flushed down the toilet because some suit decides they are not making enough money; I still call Bull-$#%@ on this.

While I agree with you that hearing "the other side" can be helpful; in this case it adds nothing to the already the situation; Take Two and Rockstar allowed modding for 10 years, thus silently endorsing the growth of the modding community and sales of many of their games to this demographic. said demographic is what resulted in the PC market for these games to grow; as well as hugely popular mods (which are not only on this website but some have also won awards and featured in articles elsewhere) which increased sales and growth of the former demographic. now out of the blue Take Two decides to take an issue with it and thus alienated a HUGE demographic that is why they are in the PC market in the first place; THIS is why people are mad, and THIS is why hearing the "other side" in this particular context is not going to help!

I have already mentioned in a previous post why I take such a strong issue with this and the rest of the "AAA" industry so I will not go into detail here. However as far as I am concerned in this situation, Take Two and Rockstar have made their own bed; let them lie in it.

they choose to alienate the demographic they fostered for 10 years; let them deal with the fallout they created; I am taking my business elsewhere and they have no-one to blame but themselves for it.

Edit 1: first salvo of typo correction

Unbelievable; so out of the blue after modding in the GTA community has had a major presence since GTA III and OpenIV released 2.9 a few months ago....NOW IT"S AN ISSUE!?

I am really starting to believe this anti-modding streak we are starting to see recently is out fear of triple A companyes that random people on the internet can deliver a better product in both stability, content, and talent then the buggy messes that are being presnted with 10/10 and game of the year material that is being pushed like a polished turd; shoot i still remember MERP's legal battle with WB which I bet was because Shadow of Mordor was in early concept stages.

Honestly as controversial as this sounds on a modding site, I think the minute a company starts shutting down mods the community making them should up and leave. Yes I am well aware that many individuals work for years with no pay and even unofficial tools to make content for franchises they love and want to contribute to. However it is getting to the point where I think the sooner the modding community starts making their own IP's and tells company's like Take Two, DICE, EA, and others to #@$% off the better.

I know that may not be an option for everyone and I can understand that since their are company's that are still willing to allow individuals to make content and provide mod tools, but if the "professionals" in the industry are charging ridicules amount for buggy messes, lazy writing, and pandering to people who have never played games in their lives; then let them lie in their own death bed.

I have been around in the modding community since I bought Morrowind in 2009; I know the talent that exists in the modding communities here at MDDB, Nexus, and many other sties is able to be on par or even out class many of the "professionals" that use E3 and other venues as a glorified echo chamber; how much longer until these C&D continues to the point where no companies are willing to cater to modder's out of fear? Why are we as a creative community that have made fan content featured in magazines, blog, or even company blogs not willing to take the next step and use the many engines that are available to make content without the fear of C&D? Why are we still willing to kiss the boot of companies that see modders as just free labor to patch of the bugs, features, and problems that they are to lazy to fix?

I am tired of hearing news of fan content being shut down after years of hard work because of "polices" or "copyright" when it is practically free advertising or a boost in sales as many people have bought games or got into a franchise because of the fan creation. If that is the game they want to play then I say that the sooner modders start taking a stand and making their own IP's that can provide healthy competition to these companies the better; the gaming community that many of us have grown up with need it.

the companies give out business cards to the new talent in the industry need it, the developers who use their minds to create the worlds and stories that can impact millions need it,and the people who grew up or will grow up with these games that they will cherish in the hearts need it.

True, but now there is no way for other users to give feedback if they DO NOT like a comment.I agree that in some cases rating a comment can be a bad thing especially if it is an opinion, but in reality not all opinions are equal or on topic to what is being discussed and in the case of an online comment section; sometimes the best kind of user feedback is knowing that a lot of people did NOT LIKE what you have posted.

I expect that a lot of modders will turn to inde development as a response to this; after all why waste your time making a TC, overhaul, or other high quality mods when the mod store had skins, hats, and re-textures bringing in the big bucks? if I can spend the amount of time for TC and other big projects making a game that I have full rights to and 100% profits to vs making a TC that I will not get full credit for, take around a P-p cut from people who did no work, and losing out to skins and other cheap mods for bigbucks; why the hell would I bother when I can get a game engine and make my own world?

that is what bothers me the most; why are they making an OS exclusive with support from Firaxis? why the name change? I am rather concerned that with all this official support, publicity, and a sudden name change along with the announcement of this mod; why is it an exclusive when the original mod AND both base games are available on MAC and Linux already?

not denying the time and money factor, but with the first mod being available to all systems and BOTH XCOM Enemy Unknown and XCOM 2 being available to all as well; this splits the fan base that Long War has and sets a bad president for developers commissioning mods.

I do like the idea of developers commission mods, but NOT when it becomes an OS's exclusive to a mod and TWO base games that were available on all three OS; that is the kind of crap that console developers pull and why people choose PC.

I hope your right and they release it on MAC and Linux later, but if this mod and studio become as success I fear we may start seeing OS's systems) (or greedy publishers/devs trying to contract for exclusives like consoles.

I do not want that; not with steps being made for cross platform multiplayer and less exclusives. I sure others do not want that as well.

"...nor will it work on Mac or Linux" great; if there is one thing I hate more then console exclusives; it is opporating system exclusives. although why in the world are they not allowing a mod to be on other OS's when the base game is available on ALL 3?

As much as it frustrates me seeing this going on with Bethesda and Autumn Leaves; this is not the first time I have heard of this and unfortunately I feel like Bethesda is getting more flack then it needs to.

I remember hearing about Frozen copying the Snowman from a smaller indie move where most of the staff attended, and recently a game was DMCA'd from Steam by Activision over having "similar guns." I am worried that situations like this will be come more common; however not because of laziness, but because we are beginning to more broadly apply things such as plagiarism and DMCA to so many things.

What I mean by this is how the term plagiarism and copyright infringement have gone from stealing a whole work and selling it when it is not yours; however now just having a simmer idea, concept, word, clip, or lyric is no considered stealing.

I know this seems like a huge jump or it is unreal ted, but Frozen and the game are in trouble not because they stole the entirety of the work taking took inspiration from, but by having a "similar concept" or two to what they took inspiration from; which I don't feel is right.

I still feel like the developer should receive some acknowledgement or credit such as "Inspired by Autumn Leaves by________" but as the article says "...Autumn Leaves’ inspirations are countless (Asimov’s, Cluedo, Planescape : Torment, Arcanum, older Fallouts, etc.) and being influenced is a natural part of the writing process." So since Bethesda took inspiration from Autumn Leaves, which took inspiration form others; I don't feel like Bethesda was in the wrong BUT they should give acknowledgement.

Yeah i know the name was corny, i just wanted to try to fit it to lore xp
