Qasir Al-Wasat: A Night in-Between

Game review

What I had thought would just be a basic stealth game with nice art turned out to be one of the best games I've played in a while. The palace was a joy to explore with plenty of secret rooms and manuscripts to find. The stealth mechanics slowed the pace of the game compared to similar games which was refreshing. Not only did it allow me to fully enjoy the art, it made the exploration more deliberate. The puzzles, though not necessarily the most original, were well executed, well paced, and fit wonderfully with the theme without ever feeling forced. The story was really engaging, original, and one of the highlights of the game. My only complaint would be that as much as I enjoyed the sound, some of the sounds could get annoying after hearing them many times in a row. Overall, I highly recommend this game. It exceeded my expectations in every way.

Operation Smash

This is a solid metroidvania. Though it sticks pretty close to the conventions of its genre, it has just enough original ideas to make it its own. The level design is very well done and the main reason I rated the game as high as I did.

SONAR

Game review

This game does so much right that I really wanted to give it higher rating. It does an amazing job of creating a tense atmosphere at all times. The minimal graphics force you to listen and respond to the sounds. I found myself picturing in my head what the cave looked and felt like, which I imagine one would actually have to do if they were trapped in a cave with nothing but a sonar. However, I found sneaking past the enemies almost imossible at times. The rock throwing is great conceptually, but most the time I found it incredibly difficult to successfully distract the enemies. For instance, an enemy could use its own sonar like ability to detect me from around a corner half way across the screen, but they only seem to hear the rocks when the rock hits a wall nearly right next to them. At that distance, distracting an enemy with a rock seems pointless. Most of the game is designed really well, and it is worth at least trying the demo. If the enemy AI is improved with SONAR+, I would highly recommend this game.
