I have done some research(although this is speculation) and the game licenses using lotr content seem to normally have 6 years before the renovation of the contract. See some examples of this:

lotro started in 2007 and they need to renovate their license or the game will come to an end this year

EA lost its rights in 2009 and its first game was released in 2003

so by doing the math WB had the rights in 2009 so 2009+6= 2015 so if they do not renovate the license at least in 2015 Merp can continue its project(probably)

i hope they drop the C&D because waiting 1 year and a half is quite a bit

He is right, waiting for C&D to be over is not fighting, we have to give something new to the fans so they wont lose the hope and with new content we could even receive more signatures.
so my idea would be: i would start new a mod lotr inspired here on moddb (after the exams)with new weapons, armor, maybe buildings(but i will not give specific names from lotr so they wont C&D me), these would attract people and i would say them to visit this mod and to sign the petition, and if my work is good enough it could be used later on this mod.
If anyone wants to join me please do so and remember above all the objective is to attract people to MERP not to add new content to this mod, that is only if the MERP team agrees to add some things, since this is will be a different project
Please say what you think about this idea and say if you agree or disagree with somthing.

well they have said innumerous times that they won't give random name to the characters but they don't have to make right now the quests and so on, there is still a lot of map to be filled, cities to be created so we only have to wait for the permission to give the names.
They could temporarly shut down this project and create one where there is only landscape(no quests or monsters or something they can say its under trademark) and continue what they have left, they can even not name it as middle earth this way they are playing according the rules and the project continues

WB greed tried to stop the mod and it happens that greed may also put the mod back into action

i have some questions:

Can you draw new concept art and post it in modb without problems?
I mean you aren't actually creating anything new for the mod so you could do some while the C&D is out there

Can fans create a new page here in modb with meshes and textures that if you want and think they are suitable be included in your mod?

if you can´t work maybe some fans may create some things for you and you could choose some of our work. Because we aren't actually creating anything from the films or creating a mod they cant C&D and this may be an alternative way to continue the mod

I think the mod can continue but not with USA members because WB won' t find who is building the mods in other countries and USA don't have the power to arrest anyone outside the county. they would have to make deals with countries in order to arrest them, see the case of Julian Assange that can't be arrested by the british police because he is in equador embassy(which means he is in equador territory)and because there are so much modders it will be very difficult to track them and if they find they wont waste that money because they will waste more than what they would gain if the mod is shut
