Having both the background of the playable area and the border background as the same brick texture - only darkened slightly is poor art direction. There is not enough contrast and it's really boring and grey.

I'd suggest looking at popular 2D sidescrollers, like Cave Story, Castlevania, and Metroid for ideas on how to break the monotony. Simple things like using contrasting colour schemes between backgrounds, and border tiles can really help. : Media1.gameinformer.com Note the blue and yellow contrast scheme as well as the sparse use of border tiles to direct interest to certain areas.

Good model, it closely resembles a Steyr M series pistol.

Just a note, Glocks don't have hammers, as they use a striker instead.
