Thank you!
For anyone who can't run this, follow the instructions here: Steamcommunity.com
There is even a link to a pre-made gameinfo file at the end of that post.
OK, what wiseguy decided to put manhacks in Advanced Chamber 17?? Was that really from Valve?
To make it work on Linux, I was able to compile the sources myself from the Git repository, and use the "upcoming" Source SDK Base beta as suggested here. Additionally I had to extract the sound folders from the "portal_misc" and "portal_sound_vo_english" vpks (using Wine + HLExtract) to make the sound work properly (unfortunately only figured this out after nine chambers!).
It was worth it! :D
Well, it's been two years since this comment was made, but since I finally saw it I may as well respond.
Yes, the idea was that it's a CGI human – the robot wants to present a human face to make test subjects trust it, but obviously not very successfully. I think it was some random idea I had once and decided to implement when I actually made a mod, despite the incongruity. Maybe someday I'll make a reboot version where I dispense with this weird idea.
About the voice, noted. I had asked a few people about doing a robot voice, but nothing came of it so I ended up doing it myself. Back then I definitely wasn't in a position to pay anyone either. In the future, who knows…
This seems like a very interesting project, but unfortunately it seems to be broken on the newest BM. Textures were messed up in the Xenian environment in Questionable Ethics and the scene where the Vortigaunts come over to Freeman during the Cascade, and the Xen maps themselves won't even load. Pity, I was really looking forward to trying it!
(Unless my files got corrupted somehow?)
I never approved this. I had no knowledge of it.
The VGUI textures don't show up for me. Any idea what the problem might be?
As far as I know, Portal 2 can't read the newest VPKs, so I need to wait for an update that fixes that. Also, the gameinfo syntax is different from that of the newest Source-Engine SteamPipe games. I think it's reasonable to believe that the reason for the delay in a GNU/Linux version is that these updates are being done.
Okay, that seems to be live now, check teh description for link.
I could put it on the server I have here at home, but I'm not making any promises that that'll work for you.
Since it doesn't use binaries, I'm practically certain of it.
You should run Portal 2 first then.
It should be on your Steam games list.
Modding the portal colours is actually quite simple - just make your own pak01_dir.vpk containing only the directory structure and files required to make the change (same as in Portal 1) and put it in the mod directory. It's what I did for my mod, so I know it works!
I believe that Portal 2's default is F7, just like Half-Life 1.
This is for all intents and purposes the final version, but Valve might change something with a future DLC, in which case I'll have to do an update.
I was talking to sandwyrm, not you. He/she made the mistake of thinking of embedded systems using the Linux kernel as being compatible with the desktop GNU system that also happens to use the Linux kernel. They are hardly related at all.
TBH, I'm not a fan of making Chamber 1 different to both official versions. Also, let me point out that Chambers 2 and 3 were never joined in anything official either.
But, apart from that, this seems to be very good, and thanks for keeping the pistons in Chamber 10 intact instead of replacing them with panels.
I would like to point out that the elevator instances do have inputs (in the form of @ entities) to stop the elevator from arriving until you want it to, which would prevent the dialogue from being cut off by players stepping in too early.
I think that your mistake is thinking of Linux as an entire operating system. Linux is a kernel, used by several different operating systems that are not compatible in any meaningful way.
I honestly couldn't find anyone better...
What makes you think anybody did expect that? Also, anything is possible for a persistent modder: Youtube.com
Steam works fine under Wine already. Even Portal 2 works fairly decently.
Yes, that's troubling... I might release a new version soon, so that'll fix the download automatically.
I like the emotionless voice. It's eerie how she's so calm when she's explaining her evil intentions to the player.
You need to put this before the map with the underground elevator:
