"Vojáky v čase potřeby budeme všichni!" - "We're all soldiers in the time of need!"
I always hear about massive Soviet casualties at least 2 times bigger then their German opponents, so I decided to write this.
First and most importantly - German army was considered to be undefeatable until they met Soviets and it was greatest army of it's time.
And now, numbers.
According to post-Soviet archival work of G. I. Krivosheev in Soviet Casualties and Combat Losses number of men who died fighting for:
Now it seems that Soviets really had 2 times bigger losses and that's the problem, because this is exactly the reason why people say that Soviets had 2 time bigger casualties ... well let's continue
Germany and it's occupied terriories: 6,923,700
Germany + occupied territories + satelate states (whole axis power that fought on Eastern front) : 8,649,500.
That means 11,285,057 against 8,649,500.
Result is losses ratio 1.3 to 1.0 in Axis favour...
Is it really so bad for nation that had to build it's army under attack?
Germans executed 3.5 millions of Soviet prisoners, but Soviets "only" 300 000 German soldiers.
So if you exclude casualties of POWs and count only soldiers who died in the battle you'll get
SSSR: 7 785 057 AXIS: 8 348 500
With total ratio
1,00 : 1,07 in SOVIET favour.
Never forget to consider that eastern front was not only war Germany vs SSSR. There were also Hungarians, Italians, Romanians, Croatians and many others... their casualties should not be counted?
Also don't forget to consider that 3.5 million of 11 million soldiers were prisoners executed by Germans... on the other hand majority of German POWs (about 70%) inprisoned in SSSR returned home. So were Germans better warriors because they killed more POWs?
Doesn't matter how you count it but number of soviet casualties to german casualties will be always NEAR TO 1:1.
So please, don't make fun of country that have suffered biggest casualties (11 million soldiers and 14 millions civilians) fought against 80% of German forces and saved Europe from nazism.
Soviet army was very powerful and it's soldiers were brave and very good warriors. Don't let antisoviet myths to fool your mind.
