Platformance: Castle Pain

Game review

This is the first of the two available Platformance games here at Desura and it's a tricky one. The whole game is just a big map playable on 3 difficulties. You have checkpoints all around the level, but after you've found the ghost, you don't have too much time finishing the game. Once you touch the ghost, it's over and you have to start again.

After playing it on each difficulty and either finishing it or quitting, the replay value relies on beating highscores or playing it with your friends, as in, you either show-off or laugh as they fail. The story is about a kidnapped princess and a knight risking his life (/lives) to save her. Once you've done it, that's it. Time for a replay. Unless you're bored already.

I can't say it's worth 2€ for me, but as an addition to the "gone fishing" Indie Royale bundle, it was worth it. The game is short and that takes a bit off the score but I did enjoy it. P:CP serves as a nice example for indie developers and as a quick waste of time, testing your nerves and patience. If you're a challenge junkie, try beating this one on hardcore within 5-10 minutes, maybe faster. Your prize? The internets.

Platformance: Temple Death

Game review

Death after death after death... This game isn't for those with a short attention span. But how rewarding it feels when you get to the next checkpoint you've been trying for who knows how long. If you liked Super Meat Boy, you might like this one, the common factors being a 2D game and often seen death animation. Just expect to get a few flopwards before any actual awards. Yeah, those are granted to you after failing miserably for several minutes. The level feels super long and the checkpoints seem to be so far, yet so close. The game supports (at least) the XBox 360 PC Controller and, just like in SMB, it just feels right to play with a controller.

This is a fun game to play, be it home when you're bored or on a long bus trip with your laptop. 3 difficulty levels will keep you busy for a while, unless you hate playing the same level over and over again. The story is, well, there, but it's nothing deeper than life.

This game is mostly for the challenge junkies. I bought it from the "Gone fishing" Indie Royale bundle and got two Platformance games for the price of... Two. And a few other games. The game has tons of potential and I expect this won't be the last one. Maybe one day the levels won't be sold as separate levels.

Awesome. One of the few RPGs I still find interesting enough to play alone. If I had more time to spare for gaming, I think this game would get the most of it. This game and Oniken are the only reasons I bought the bundle and installed Desura, but I have no regrets. Steam loses a lot by not accepting the game.

I'd give it a 10/10 if the game had those awesome retro 16-bit graphics. That's just me though. Otherwise this game feels just awesome.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Game review may contain spoilers

This is the first and only game so far that has had me hide behind corners and DIY crate/barrelwalls for several minutes, hoping that the unknown monster goes away.

This is the first game that made me scream in terror and press the run button harder than really needed, looking for a dark place, which seemed safer than confronting that gruesome thing in clear light.

If you seek horror, look no further. An indie developer has done something far better than any bigger company has even come close to; Make. You. Fear.
