dsilvers - - 39 comments @ Launch Day! Mondrian – Plastic Reality is now Available on Steam

Hey thanks so much!

Unfortunately despite a lengthy and hearty Wishlist campaign, we never got beyond 160 Wishlist adds before yesterday. We've since added ~20. So that's okay at least, but in terms of conversions... let's just say I don't know what everyone is waiting for. Maybe they're saving their pennies for Cyberpunk or something. But honestly even 100 something sales would be enough to get the train rolling, and 1000 would be a dream come true.

Marketing this game has been an uphill struggle. Even the original game sold a solid 20,000 copies and made its way to the Smithsonian American Art Museum. One would think that a followup that incorporates actual creative toolsets, Steam Workshop, a dynamic color scheme system, and much deeper gameplay would be a no-brainer. Yet despite the effort and solid plan, we never found a marketing partner who would go beyond two meetings, or who wouldn't use the pandemic as an excuse for not doing their jobs. Factor in social media REALLY no longer being an effective promotional platform and no money for advertisements, and that leaves us with grassroots.

Luckily, we have built the game not as a Day 1 "what you see is what you get" title, but as something we knew would be a slow burn over time. That's kinda the nature of live service, but this is a weird one since it's single player, user-generated-content focused live service. Like if Photoshop had its own DeviantArt built in and you could then blow up everyone's artwork. The game itself is very different, so obviously the same old song and dance for marketing isn't going to cut it.

TL;DR: Our Wishlist campaign got hampered by a lot of factors: weird game, social media algorithms, no real world expos/events, and uncooperative marketing firms. That in turn hampered launch, but we knew it wasn't a game built for launch hype, but a game that could grow a creative community behind it over a long period of time, and if we can give that community a fun game with nice additions at a consistent rate, having an effectively "failed" Wishlist campaign won't have even mattered. Time will tell.

I dunno how I missed the comment a month ago but THANK YOU! It's really coming along. Actually, we're launching on Steam Early Access tomorrow (as well as here on Desura, plus Humble and IndieGameStand), so we've really come a long way in those three years. :)

Very true. I didn't mention it but this used to be a multiplayer game, ala New Super Mario Bros on Wii. There were two issues though: one, players kept trying to knock each other out than help each other, and two, more than two players and Fusion started choking. We could never find the RAM leak. Plus writing 24 variations on the story was not an undertaking I felt like pursuing.

Fusion has a lot more hardware support now than it did before, especially for mobile devices, but Unity has had it from the start. It IS good to see Fusion catching up, though, and Fusion3 is due out this year. That could be something to behold.

Thank you! It's been a ridiculous transition. I still personally use Fusion 2.5 (recent upgrade) for my "sketchbook" but for something of this magnitude I think we made the right decision.

Thanks! We're really excited about where it's heading and yeah, that whole young protagonist aspect has made for some really neat challenges in terms of narrative and gameplay.

Soon! We're crunching like crazy but don't want to put out anything broken or what could be perceived as a "downdate."

This problem got alleviated, right? If not I'll look into it for the next build.

The Unity Web Player is a fantastic plugin that gives you access to all manner of games on the web, 2D AND 3D! Worse case scenario, the game is on sale right now for just $5 for the #becauseWeMay sale.

The version available on Desura does not need Unity to play. It is a standalone executable for both PC and Mac.

Only the demo on our website needs the Unity Web Player to play.

On the site you had to select the specific section where your game is available. It wasn't really obvious at first that you could submit multiple times for different sections but hopefully developers will email in updates.

The game stars four kids, ranging from 8-14. You are definitely within range! Message me your info and I'll send you an audition packet.

Unity does not have a native Linux exporter. It does have Google Native Client. If Desura accepts NaCl as Linux builds and we feel like that version lives up to our expectations, we'll release it.

As of right now Unity doesn't have a native Linux exporter, however it does have support for Google Native Client. We've been discussing releasing a version for NaCl, and if we feel like that version lives up to our expectations, and it's accepted as a Linux build on Desura, then we'll definitely release it.

Not sure what the problem was, most likely either a connectivity issue or something with Desura. I hear Verizon FiOS is having trouble in some areas today, may have been related to that if you're on FiOS. Glad it worked though! Enjoy the game, updates will be coming in hopefully on a more steady basis in the coming weeks/months.
