how daheck do you join servers? everytime i try to join my friends server it wont let me. it'll just let me spam the join button but nothing will happen

can someone plz help me i cant start the game i execute the command throught the developers console and while waiting for the game to load it crashes as soon as it finishes loading like the moment the white bar on the loading bar reachers the end my game just crashes and it creates a dmp file or smth like that plz help i really wanna play this mod :s
