Oil Rush is a great game but it's not open source.

Are Darwinia and Multiwinia open source? Sure?

Cheeseness wrote: Edit: Never mind. Oil Rush seems to be on Desura already!

It is?

Yes, sure! :)

Sep 21 2011 Anchor

Oh yes, I knew that, but that's not open source, because of the license.

Yeah, sorry. For some reason I thought the last group was commercial games.

Kiki The Nanobot may not be the prettiest game on the face of the planet, but it's definitely a great puzzle game and might belong in the list.

what about "Savage 2: A Tortured Soul"?

Sep 24 2011 Anchor

Savage series are all freewares, close source.

Any Open Source games you want to see on the system have the developers make an account and PM me and we can work on getting their games on the system. I can't do all the games, graphics, screenshots, videos, etc. all by myself. If the developers or someone in the community would take over specific games that would help me quite a bit in being able to get more and more games on the system.

There are some games posted here as Open Source that are not:

Inside a Star filled Sky -Video - Commerical, the source is only available if you purchase the game and it's not GPL.
Sleep is death -Video - Commerical, the source is only available if you purchase the game and it's not GPL.
Aquaria - Video - The source code is available but the graphics aren't free.
Darwinia - Video - Not free and source only available to licensed developers who purchase the developer kit, not GPL
Multiwinia - Video - Not free and no source code available that I know of.
Return to castle Wolfenstein - Video - Not free you have to buy the game even though the Linux engine is released for use with Windows purchases.

Q3Rally ca not be included because some of the graphics are under a CC non-commerical license. So that would rule out us putting it on the system for free.

Corsix-TH (Theme Hospital) uses the original data files from the game Theme Hospital so we would not be able to distribute it.

Don't be ridiculous... Sleep is Death is open-source. NO TERMS of Open Source forbid access to code with cost as long as the code it allow to free redistribute. Its code under Public Domain.

Fixed, thanks.

I'm going to delete Multiwinia and Darwinia but the other games have an open engine, so i think it's ok. :)
PS: GPL is not the only licence to open source code. (BSD, zlib, WTFPL, etc)

Added: Kiki the Nanobot and GoblinHack.

I never said it wasn't allowed. What I said was that it was commerical (yes you have to buy it to get it) and that it wasn't GPL. Nowhere on the site does it say exactly what the license is for the source code. It just says it is Open Source, without a link back to OSI even though he is using their logo. I have seen people say they are Open Source when in fact you read license and it wouldn't qualify for Open Source. I have no idea about this one since the license is not posted. For the source code to be public domain the developer would have to explicitly put it in the public domain since in the US everything is copyright the moment it is made.

Any game put on Desura that is free would either have to have the developer's permission or have a license that does not prohibit commercial use/distribution.

What exactly you take as rule to include or not include games in the "upcoming" section? After all you have there long time projects like 0AD while next to it bare-bone stuff like pseudofram (tech-demo).

Sep 27 2011 Anchor

The only rule is : "great and not bad"
0.A.D. is great, Pseudoform is not bad, finaly it's very subjective. I have grouped them in this section because anyway they are all at a stage where they can not be included.

Need rates?

EDIT: Fixed? :)

It's just that you can't really judge if a game is great or bad before the release especially if it's in infancy stage or simply not released yet. If you want to make a list you would have to include then all titles on IndieDB in the Linux/Unreleased category or none at all. Otherwise it's quite selective.

Sep 27 2011 Anchor

It is selective, yes.
Games must be open source first, the main problem is i don't know the others, if you know one i will add it with pleasure.

Sep 27 2011 Anchor

As mentioned, IndieDB with Linux as platform and Unreleased as filter gives quite the selection. Can't link the search though since Linux as platform is not included in the URL but is stored in POST or something I guess.

Sep 27 2011 Anchor

I don't really go for that sort of game (possibly because I can play an actual guitar), but a lot of my friends seem to like Frets On Fire.

I think the platform ends up being a property of the session, Dragonlord.

Sep 28 2011 Anchor

Added next Fofix (because Fofix is a fork of Frets on Fire).

Im going to search open source games in IndieDB, i hope i will find some fabulous treasures!

You want to know more Linux games, then visit Lgdb.org , listing 964 games to date

Sep 28 2011 Anchor

There's a good number (with ratings) at Happypenguin.org too

Sep 29 2011 Anchor

I don't have time to test all of them on IndieDB but i added OGS Mahjong, Warlock's Gauntlet, Open Clonk and Neverputt.

There are some others open source games in Happypenguin and Lgdb but honestly most of them are made like in a coding week-end. So i think the better choice is to put games we like to see on the Desura Catalogue. If you think about another open source game you like, just tell me i add it. :)

PS: If you hate a game on this list I can remove it too.

Sep 29 2011 Anchor

I guess it's a good thing I added Neverputt to IndieDB a couple of days ago then, lol

Why can all the games be added ? More games will definitely not harm desura.
