So, what anime series are you currently watching? I figure there are probably people here that are watching the same thing and it would be nice to get some conversations going on different series ...

Right now I've been watching:

High School of the Dead (I think this is on hiatus for a while)
Okamisan (also on hiatus)
Shiki
The Legend of the Legendary Heroes (lol ... weird name)
Naruto
Neon Genesis Evangelon (Finally! ... its been on the "want to watch" list for a while ... Its not as psychologically fucked up as I thought though ... still have 3 episodes left though :o ...)
The World God Only Knows (I got really bored one night and decided to try it out ... It turned out to be much more interesting than i thought simply because the male lead takes on a womanizing role rather than the passive role you see with most of these kinds of shows (is it a harem? ... not sure if it qualifys))
Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai (because you guys were talking about it earlier ... the plot I predicted turned out to be true ... but it seems to have been accelerated WAY faster than I suspected ... then again thats probably a good thing, because that series would have been pretty dull without much development.)

Clonewarrior, i just read the synopsis of your series ... "The story follows a series of bizarre murders of schoolgirls who have been dismembered and stuffed into boxes." That's fucked up :O ... Is it any good?

oooohh ... Shikabane Hime was so morbid! LOL I watched that one a while back and was amazed at the ending ... (not saying it was an awesome ending, im saying i was amazed at the morbid ending)

Also i tried GunXSword the other day ... it was kinda meh so I havent watched more than one episode ...

Shikabane Hime wasn't that morbid, thought it would be better, still a nice watch tough.

Looking at animes like Higurashi and Elfen Lied, want to make a break from cuteness like k-on :P

In that case, you should watch one of these:
Gantz (Most notable for the shock value ... probably should only be viewed by the mature)
Baccano! (Kinda clusterfucked ... it jumps around in time and doesnt have a main character per se ... but its still a pretty cool story)
Blood+ (This one i find quite tragic ... some people may not find it very tragic ... but i believe that anytime a main character's personality is permanently changed from light hearted to somewhat pessimistic and dark due to situation... that fits tragic pretty well.)
Blue Gender (Main character pisses himself in the first episode ^_^ ... there is also some quite noteable gore that kinda shocks you. Its pretty much like starship troopers ... except it was made before starship troopers I think.)
Claymore (quite common dismemberment as well as some tragic scenes)
Detroit Metal City (Its a hilarious comedy, but its not exactly cute >_>)
MD Geist (Its a movie ... contains some seriously fucked up mindless violence)
Monster (Sort of an ongoing mystery ... it features a really messed up antagonist who has psychological issues who basically kills people and fucks up the protagonist's life on a whim ... the protagonist pretty much spends the rest of the series trying to stop/kill him)
Now and Then, Here and There (Your basic psychopath tries to rule the world type anime ... P.S. Hamdo is an ass ... watch it and you will know what im talking about)
Planetes (This one is about the perserverance of mankind's drive to explore ... it takes place in the future where space travel is somewhat common, however, it highlights that societies flaws have not been conquered ... very beautifully animated)
Serial Experiment Lain (I actually dropped this one ... i watched the first episode and it freaked me out a little too much (don't really know why ...))

Definitely one of those ... I left out alot of the shounen crap though considering that is fairly common

Bakuman - it turned out way more boring than i thought. first chapters of manga were also boring though.
Texhnolyze - rewatching this gem. still as depressing as it used to.

Someone wrote: Its not as psychologically fucked up as I thought though ... still have 3 episodes left though :o ...)

most of psychological stuff happens in last 2 episodes. and of course after that you gotta see End of Evangelion, which is much more messed up.

you really should give it a try once more, it's an awesome series.
the only bad thing about it is mediocre drawings and animation.
Lain is the kind of anime they don't make anymore...

I just watched the last two episodes ...

It seems it just goes into this extremely depressing existential downward spiral :( ...

(semi depressing rant ahead)
You know, it really pisses me off when movies and series get existential ... Simply because when it comes to the subject of "Why are we here?", we (as humans) usually come to the conclusion that there is no real reason and the more you reflect on that the more depressing it is ... Isn't it just better to completely ignore the subject the subject for the sake of happiness? I mean, there are definitely some cases where people need help with depression, and they should receive it.

For the most part however, serious existential topics such as "Why are we here?" and "Why do we constantly emotional distance from each other?" do not belong in a form of entertainment ... you will just end up potentially depressing someone when they reflect on it.

Later in the very last episode, it somewhat "pulls out" of this spiral by saying "Just kidding! everything is fine because its a dream" and tries to cheer people up by showing the characters in a false cheerful life and attempts to explain that what makes you feel sad or depressed is your perception of the world and you perception can be changed ...If that was their whole purpose for the series then why the hell did they enter the existential spiral in the first place than jump straight to the happy ending?!?

tl;dr of spoiler:
tl;dr It seems that depression is usually a biproduct of existential thought ... therefore, none of that crap should be in entertainment.

yeah, i basically agree. but do you never find yourself in a (sorta masochistic) mood to think about these things? cos most people do. I shure as hell know that I do.

you repeated few times that this stuff doesn't belong to entertainment.
so you think the only purpose of anime (and movies and books) is to -entertain- people?

--------------------
as for evangelion ending, it indeed feels rather weird.
the reason for this is that the makers have changed its plot eventually since their budget got too low to portray what they wanted to.
End of Evangelion is closer to original scripts, it's basically a retelling of last 2 episodes.
(though the other theory says that End of Evangelion and series ending are complementary)

I wasn't aware that entertainment has any other purpose than to entertain >_> ...

maybe that's a translation issue or something, but if you think that movies, books, comics, etc by definiton are nothing more than a form of entertainment, which sole purpose is to amuse people, then there's something wrong here.

You know, most authors wanna -share their views- on things.
Some do it in an "in yo face" fashion. others make this stuff much more obscure, requiring some usage of brain from a viewer if he wants to see what they meant.
What you see in authors' works at least to some extent reflects their fears, their hopes, their memories and conclusions. many of them try to convey some message with movies, books, anime, etc.

that's why putting "entertainment" label on all of them is exteremely disrespectful to a shitload of authors.

Hmm ... the word "entertainment" defintiely doesn't quite suit books ... The reason why is its quite common for people to know exactly what the book talks about or if its a story. People often use books to look for information, opinions, etc without actually expecting to be amused from reading it.

I dunno, I guess it is ok to ruin a story just so the author/director can get their point across ... but not when its unexpected ... does that make sense?

Lets put it like this ...

If you go to a library and pick up a book on politics you know exactly what to expect when it comes to content just by reading the synopsis ...

You go see a movie like "toy story" or something but instead of a happy ending you get a ending where all the toys get blown up by the kid because the director wants to highlight the destructive tendancies of mankind ...

How many hypothetical people who went to that hypothetical movie would have expected that ... None of them would because they expect a story with a happy ending or and ending that makes the watcher feel happy that they watched the movie ... not upset or depressed.

This is kinda where the movie "million dollar baby" totally defies any of that logic, yet somehow gets a virtual handjob from hollywood via an oscar. Most of the people, like 95% of the people, who went to see that movie was expecting a tale of overcoming the odds due to extreme determination. Instead it just got really fucking dark at the end with no real good to come out of it. It probably depressed millions of people and yet it won an oscar. -_-

Go for it ... although if you can find someone who has the same tastes as you, you should really note their top 5 lists ... some of these show really are Golden

(Speaking of which Ive been watching a ton of "crapime" lately and i just got around to watching the second season of Spice and Wolf ... I totally forgot that feeling of watching a really good anime show until now ^^)

Also, I have this distinct impression that I was watching something ... and I got to episode 8 or so ... and took a break from it to watch something else ... and now I cant remember what that original show was >_> ...

Its odd though because I cant even think of any characters of said show, episode plots, etc ... Its just the feeling that I haven't finished a series >_> ...

Oh, btw ...

Is anyone here watching "Princess Jellyfish"?

I just watched the first episode and i think its gonna be great :) ... the intro alone is somehow heartwarming ... lots of potential for entertainment!

The moe/kawaii otaku guys may not like it so much though ...
