A lot of games of this genre tend to have so many visuals that it is difficult to see what is going on. I like how the background is a muted blue color, while the active enemies are brighter colors that stand out more.

If you could ensure the gibs that appear when an enemy died stayed the muted pastels - blue, gray, brown, etc., it would help the enemies stand out even more.
