This time we are here with a Towns 0.41 mini-preview.

Posted by supermalparit on Feb 16th, 2012

Hello everyone, it's news time once again!

This time we are here with a 0.41 preview.

First off I think we should talk a bit about the new priorities panel. What will it do? Well, basically it will state each type of queue, ranging from hauling to cooking.
You will be able to designate the priority of each different order type, and give preference to them, so if you were to need more food, for example, you would put food at the top of the list, harvesting second, and everything else underneath. It will definitely give you a more streamlined gameplay experience as giving you a bit more indirect control lend's itself to a host of new possibilities!

Next up are the new roads. Why are there roads in the game? Because now everyone has slowed down!
We have taken a decision to make the game flow a bit slower in preparation for animations and all sorts of other goodies! Roads will speed people along their way and there might even be special equipment that can help your little guys zip around faster!

Besides a chunk of content, there are now penalties for not building roofs over your workshops.
In order to not dupe the game, building times will be slowed down as there is no roof. Underground building is possible, but will still be slower than building with a roof over your head (I guess it's due to working in the dark... or something...)

We are currently hosting a trailer making contest on our forums, remember to hurry, as it will only be available over the next week! The best trailer will get a hero made after it's creator!

Kind Regards
-SMP Team

I think a really good idea would be. being able to control the npc as there some problems like when a spider dies the npc instantly go to the dungeon to collect this bones which in short they die. And it would be nice to know where they all are at one time =)

I'd like to assign villagers to work in certain zones. Dedicated workers who will do that job immediatly after I assign it. Have the priorities for the whole town yeah, but individual priorities would be nice too. Slight micro-management there, but I like micro-management.

I just hope they think of another penalty to replace hunger lock, how are they supposed to eat if they dont kill the pig 2 feet from them?

Oh that all sounds nice. Is there any particular reason not to build habitation/dining halls/etc underground? If not, that would make for more compact, easier to defend towns. Technically I would prefer to do that, but I could see that effecting happiness a bit. You could decide things like - absent torch lighting - everyone moves slower underground. It would make sense anyways.

Also, can you build a mill underground? I would think something like that would not be allowed - how would it be powered without wind?

Cave mushrooms growing in caves would be nice :)

Could torches be used to partially/mostly negate the underground construction problem? Possibly the use of skylights? (2nd level only) Include glass?

Most important though, make soldiers less suicidally brave, possibly with a setting for what health level they run back home at :D

This looks awesome! I can't wait for the roads and to be able to set priorities.

Could you guys make a menu screen that would show how much of each resource you have? All my stuff is kept in barrels and I wish there was a quick way to see if I have enough of a resources to build.

Also, like being able to set citizens to be soldiers, could there be jobs like Lumberjack, Chef, Farmer, Miner, Baker, Stonesmith, Carpenter, Blacksmith, Butcher, and so on?

I love this game and I can't wait to see what else you guys add to it.

@ the dev

please reconsider navigation on the map

while pressing the middle mouse button, it would make navigating much easier and relaxing.
arrow keys are a bit of a pain.

Being able to click and drag to move around the map would be a great help. Currently the way the keys are mapped out I would need 3 hands to use the hotkeys, move the map, and then one hand on my mouse.

I would also like to be able to customize the hotkeys. Like remapping the map movement to A,S,W, and D. Being able to do this would make the game a little easier to control.
