Here’s a little history tidbit for you: way back in the 15th and 16th centuries, the Aztec people claimed themselves as descendants of a mythical lost civilization called Toltec. Translated, it means artisan or craftsman and Toltecs are often associated as creators and originators of their culture. The Aztecs aspired to reach the same height of greatness that the Toltec empire achieved in their stories about them. The Florentine codex, a Spanish account of Aztec civilization describes their regard for Toltec civilization:
“The Toltec were wise. Their works were all good, all perfect, all wonderful, all marvelous… They invented the art of medicine… And these Toltec were very wise; they were thinkers, for they originated the year count… These Toltec were righteous. They were not deceivers. Their words [were] clear words . . . They were tall; they were larger [than the people today]… They were very devout… They were rich. (Sahagún, 1950–1982: book 10, 165–170)”
They are also known as originators of a ball game unique to Central America, in which losers were sacrificed to the gods. For obvious reasons, this seemed like a natural name for the studio that is creating a game based around these Toltec influences called The Ball.
But it wasn’t quite enough for the developers, they wanted something more. A name that professed their mastery over the Unreal Engine 3 and the UDK. A name that cements the studio as true creators, architects of a new virtual world for you to explore. We are Gods.
Because of this new outlook, we decided to change our name to Teotl Studios. Teotl, loosely translated, means godly or to possess a divine aura or energy. May you all marvel and bask in our glory.
Ok, maybe not. The real reason we’ve changed was because of a minor business name registering issue. So Teotl it is. While it’s not chock full of double meaning, it’s still a apt name. It’s also another piece of the business puzzle in place so we can move on with all the paperwork. You know, the least interesting part of commercial game development.Our next update will feature some new media, as we move forward we’ll be showcasing a little more of the new stuff you can expect from The Ball UDK. That is how we roll. Sorry, I love bad puns.
