OpenTTD is modelled after the original Transport Tycoon game by Chris Sawyer and enhances the game experience dramatically. There are many new features that more depth and play to the game.

TTD has taught me how to love again. Not only is this game one of the best ever made, but will they ever make a game like it? ever? And it's free! I love you guys.
Very accurate to the original, but now with better trains and signals! Signals that show green all the way into my heart.

A nice simulator... maybe the best for free, but I find it gets a bit dull after 10-20 hours of play

It's so incredible good, inteligent and addictive that you'll need to fight your impulses to don't lose your social life playing it!

It's a huge time sink, but one that you will never be sorry for. It manages to pull you into the game despite being so old school (like that was ever the problem.
OpenTTD is essentially open source version of classical Transport Tycoon game. Your goal is to build a trasport company and earn a lot of cash by the year 2050. You do that by creating transport routes between cities and businesses, but what do you do is totally up to you.
One of the strongpoints this game has to offer is building railroads. Trains don't simply drive from point A to point B, a sufficient railroad has to be built. You have to make it impossible for two trains to crash to each other by creating good intersections and placing signals that would direct the train to right track or completely stop him if needed. Things can get very complicated when you need to connect more than two or three routes (this is the time sink part).
Game can be expanded in game by user generated content. Content varies from maps to new game modules, such as trams that are not originally in the game.
Game can be hard for new players while they try to understand basic concepts of the game. Learning curve is very steep, probably my only complaint about the game. Fortunately, dedicated OpenTTD wikipedia has a handy tutorial about important aspects of the game.
This is a must have game for anybody that likes strategies and management. If you played any other tycoon game, then you might like this one as well. If you never played any strategy game, then you might feel overwhelmed by everything in this game, but you should at least try it.
