An overview of the types of Class that will be in Lithic

Classes in Lithic work in a two tiered system, with characters starting as one of three base classes with the possibility of advancing to one of several prestige classes after they have the required levels of skill and knowledge. This blog takes a look at each of the classes and their possible prestige classes. It's important to note that although a character may be eligible to prestige in some cases it might be better for them to remain as their base class – this is especially true for gatherers as you will always need their skills – even well into the game.

Gatherer
Gatherers serve as your tribe's lifeblood, bringing in much needed food, flint for making tools and wood for burning and constructing shelters. They are generally your tribe's most travelled members, exploring the surrounding areas in search of valuable objects. Skills which are important for Gatherers include Wild Lore, Perception, Knapping and Crafting.

Craftsman
Once a Gatherer's skills in Knapping and Crafting has advanced to a high enough level they can prestige as a Craftsman. The Craftsman class are experts at working stone, creating structures and clothing - generally their work is of much higher quality than any of your other tribe members could hope to achieve. They will stop actively gathering unless they have no tools or structures to make and will instead spend their time creating superior equipment for the rest of the tribe to make use of.

Farmer
When a Gatherer's Wild Lore skill is high enough and they have had the idea of crop or animal domestication they can prestige as a Farmer, spending their time tending food crops or their herd. This does however take up the vast majority of their time and whilst they provide a much greater amount of food than they would have were they still a basic Gatherer, they no longer have time to gather stone or crafting materials.

Hunter
The Hunter is your tribe's main source of meat throughout the game and also provides protection from predators and other tribes in the early game. Important skills for a Hunter include Wild Lore, Combat, Perception and Sneak.

Trapper
Once a Hunter has advanced their Crafting and Wild Lore skills to a high enough level they can become a Trapper, as a Trapper they can attempt to bring in much larger prey animals through the use of numerous devices they create. When a Trapper succeeds in killing a large animal they can normally provide enough meat and furs to feed and clothe the tribe for a long period of time – although even the most skilled trapper can have difficulty bringing down the mightiest of beasts in Lithic.

Warrior
A Hunter who has gained enough skill in Combat can prestige as a Warrior. The Warrior is an expert combatant and specialises in fighting other tribes. They are much more effective at protecting your tribe from predators and would be attackers, though they stop providing meat as they spend their time training instead of hunting as they did as a Hunter. Warriors need to be carefully managed as they can quickly drain a tribe's food supply if it's not producing the required surplus.

Wise One
Wise Ones have a much more diverse role than the other basic classes, as they fill the role of spiritual leaders, teachers and doctors. They rarely leave the tribe's camp other than to find herbs to use in their potions and even then it's often faster for them to send a gatherer to find it. Important skills for a Wise One include Learning, Teaching and Crafting.

Shaman
Once a Wise One's Crafting and Culture scores have reached a high enough level they can become a Shaman. As a Shaman they specialise into their role as a spiritual leader, spending time creating idols and other spiritual items which can greatly increase the rate at which you generate spirit points and increasing the tribe's culture score – allowing them to start influencing any other tribes in the surrounding area.

Pother
The Pother is available for Wise Ones once their Wild Lore, Crafting and Learning skills have reached the prerequisite values. Specialising in healing the tribes injuries through application of herbal medicines and basic surgery - the Pother increases your tribes lifespan by a large amount with their ability to help fight off disease and fix ailments which would otherwise be fatal.

Oracle
After a Wise One has raised their Learning, Teaching and Language skills to a certain value they can prestige as an Oracle. The Oracle class focuses on rapidly learning knowledge from discoveries the rest of the tribe has made, expanding on their ideas and quickly dispersing this knowledge to tribe members who haven't learned it yet. They serve as a conduit for technological advances and greatly speed up a tribe's development.
