Description
Hack off is a 2D action platformer featuring instant death combat and rule breaking mechanics used for travel. Inhibbited from using any other motor skills aside from moving, Ava dashes his way up and into objects to go through them.
History
This game began as a school group project. The main theme being "Hacking", it was originally intended to have a cyberpunk asthetic inspired by movies like "Ready Player One" and "The Matrix".
It slowly became more focused on the sci-fi themes after a lot of research, suggestions and brainstorming. This change affected the conceptualization process, turning the world from a dystopian night city to an utopian simulated paradise with some portuguese influences taken for the creation of the environment.
Given that the team was composed of only two artists, one being an illustrator and the other an animator, both with some experience in game design, none knew how to code the intended mechanics. With some perserverance and a lot of outside help, we managed to code the entire game through C++ and Unity's playmaker addon.
We also managed to find a third team member (a musician) to help out with the creation of the main theme song.
In general, the game development flow was good as we worked out easely what eachother wanted for the game, and, made ends meet without any issue.
