Create games in a method that suits you best! Maybe you'd be better off making small arcade games, like things that you could make in a quick game jam.

Having people play your game can also give you a lot of inspiration, as it does for us! When you're creating in a bubble, you don't really have any perspective on your game, which is why you should always be sharing it with others.

Probably the most important things I do:

  1. Make simple arcade games (pretty much what Moonbow suggests) which I think of as "sketches" or "doodles" rather than complete games. These don't always have to be games but can be simple demos just to play with the ideas and get the creative juices flowing.
  2. Write down a broad vision of what I want the game to be and then keep to-do list as the game is developed. If I need to plan something out in more detail then I do this (for my current game I had to create flow charts for the enemy AI as it was getting complicated).
  3. Carry around a hard back note book of plain paper so I can make notes during the gaps in my day.
  4. Use a laptop so I can sit where ever - mainly coffee shops, pubs and on the train - as I find the change of scenery helps.
  5. Grit my teeth and finish my game.

I also agree with Moonbow that if you can get people interested and giving useful comments or just a "keep up the good work" then that can be a great source of motivation.
