Intro
Hey there! Welcome to this week's roundup of the YouTube, where we'll be summing up the last few vids that snuck in to the end of 2022! We won't be covering the MOTY/IOTY vids here but go ahead and check out the articles for Mod of the Year and Indie of the Year's results if you'd like to catch 'em!
We're also exploring ways to re-integrate IndieDB onto our YouTube channel, featuring more shorts and perhaps playthrough vids of some indie titles on the site! Stay tuned to see how that develops!
Retro revival shooters have become quite common in recent years, but one of the rarer products of this trend is new games on classic engines. Ion Fury is built upon a modified Build Engine - the same one which once powered Duke Nukem and beyond - and features its own modding support, leading to such scenarios as Penal-lized and keeping the field of retro level design alive and well in 2022.
Half-Life's pseudoscientific theming is an aspect that defines one of the main differences between it and its successor; making even the craziest of proposals for a story expansion plausible in-universe. Half-Life: Trials isn't quite pushing the boundaries of belief, but as a sentient-ish military android designed to replace human combatants, it's premise is simple, effective, and full of potential for explosive fun.
Isolophobia is an open-world Portal map inspired by the "liminal space" trend. One of the things that makes Portal so memorable is its atmosphere and presentation - a lonely, dry experience that borders on horror at times. Many of us wished we could simply explore Aperture at our leisure, and if that's you, then this mod's tailor-made to channel that atmosphere and give you the freedom to peruse.
Some mods are bombastic total conversions that are akin to games; others are revisions of our favourites with more features to dig into. There's a quieter genre of mods, though, that White Day Repackaged belongs to - dutiful patches of older titles to make them work on modern hardware. These unsung heroes deserve the spotlight too - so sit back and check out this community-revised cult classic.
That's all for this round-up - the last one of our 2022 videos! What do you think about the mods listed? Feel free to discuss below and check out the YouTube for more videos past, present, and future!
The IndieDB idea is good.
Thanks for featuring my mod!
