I go offline for a few months only to find a massive jump in progress in my absence. I must say, I am mighty proud of the DotR team here. Admittedly, I haven't touched Sins for over a year, but I'm reinstalling as I write this.

The_Viscount - - 155 comments @ Kilimanjaro Class Dreadnought

Right. The main advantage of the Dreadnought is the main gun. Mass effect ships are typically armed with a main gun that runs approximately 80% of the ship's length. This is essentially an railgun that utilizes Mass Effect fields to reduce the mass of the bullet while retaining it's potential energy. The Everest Class fired a slug that weighed only 20 kilograms (approx 44 lbs), so, even if the Kilimanjaro has a bigger bore size, it won't be much larger than a 5in naval shell of today (probably smaller). Railguns are basically linear motors that accelerate as long as the circuit is complete (i.e. a bullet in the barrel). This means that the longer the barrel, the higher the maximum velocity and kinetic energy of the projectile fired. The higher the velocity, the longer the effective range of the gun as the gun velocity overtakes the ability of a ship to dodge.

Now, regarding your assertion that a ship with both broadsides and a spinal can't be good at both, you're partially right. Designers do tend to focus on one area or another when building ships. But you can find real life examples of ships that tote both impressive main guns and secondary armament. Look no further than the dreadnought and post dreadnought era battleships. A prime example is the Iowa Class as she was in 1943. Armed with 9 16in guns in three three-gun turrets, 20 5in guns mounted in ten twin turrets, her ability to both fight off ships at range and in close quarters were excellent. The three primary turrets were located along the center line whilst the secondary guns were placed to either side of the superstructure, five turrets to a side. This is evidence enough to me that you can design a ship that is good at both long range artillery and fleet brawling.

As for the Alliance doctrine, there is a difference between strategic and tactical level doctrine. The Systems Alliance utilizes very similar tactical doctrine to the other races on a basic level. Cruiser lines supported by dreadnought artillery and carriers behind while frigates and strike craft both escort and hunt down wounded prey. On the other hand, strategically, we try to outrun anything we can't outfight and strike at vulnerable areas of the enemy (logistics and command).

Good to see the Dalatrasses are holding up their end of the agreement. Tell me, is this ship part of the First fleet with their...special projects?

The_Viscount - - 155 comments @ The uncertain future of paid mods

I'll Drink to that. Great mods are something that people do because they have the drive and vision to create something spectacular. If a pay system in introduced, but no distinction is made, there will be a lot of anger and confusion.

I personally am very torn on the issue. I know that the gaming industry has suffered massively recently. We've all watched the deaths of familiar company names in the last few years among them THQ and Capcom. I I want the industry to be able to survive without screwing over their devs. At the same time, I fear people taking advantage of the pay for system and charging $10 for a weapons pack for Fallout 4 only for said pack to be defective and buggy.

My biggest fear is that Mods have always been a place to experiment and push the boundaries of what can be done. We may see the death of such experimentation at the hands of pay for mods.

Maybe if there was a middleground? Never charging for a mod's initial release? If it is a successful mod then offering the opportunity for the dev's to get money out of it? Kinda like what happened with Stanley Parable or Team Fortress or Garry's Mod?

I'm just thinking out loud...thoughts?

Regarding the fall of humanity, the reapers actually bypassed the sixth and seventh fleets and rushed for Arcturus. Upon arriving, they decimated the fleets stationed to defend Arcturus station and jumped their primary force through the relay. Then they did a number on the First, Third and Fifth fleets, before Admiral Hackett ordered a full retreat sacrificing the second.

Prior to the reaper invastion of 2186, I estimate the Systems Alliance Navy had similar strength to a that of the Batarian navy if not greater. The council regards the Alliance as a "sleeping giant," as, in addition to a formidable military, they have incredible industrial and economic might not to mention potential draftees. Around 3% of all humans enlist and the Alliance Military is a volunteer force.

As for the Batarians, their military was mighty, but with no allies and Karshan's poor responses, their loss was inevitable. The initial "we're under attack," was replaced by "Remain calm, Karshan is fine. We deny the existence of reapers/giant space cuttlefis--Transmission lost--

I almost want to say give "those people" in the community a version where it includes the ship, add a major disclaimer, and let them learn their lesson as their game crashes again and again. Their fault for not reading the disclaimer/install info.

Unfortunately, the likely result would be hate mail...April fools joke?

@Set: I appreciate so much that this mod is turning out so well. Regarding my salarian quip, I understand. There is very little that I have found regarding their ship designs. I just want to take a moment to say thank you to the entire team. You have worked very hard, and it shows. Take pride, for you have held the line!

Personal Log 561:

The Human, Turian and Asari fleets have all entered battle; the Batarian remnants and even the Quarian fleet are fighting for the Council! So where is the Salarian fleet? With no word from Surkesh, Mannovai, Aegohr, or Jaƫto I fear the worst.

I think it's safe to say that, we of the United States stand with our friends in France as well. As the authorities work to bring those responsible to justice, I feel the best response is defiance. Speaking out against such acts, gathering to honor those who have been lost instead of cowering in our homes, even just living our lives as normal...Yeah, that's the best revenge I can think of. So, I say, "I am Charlie."

I feel you, I haven't even had time to test the latest pre alpha release! I mean, Hackett has sent me requests to Race Wars and I'm like, "Sry, haven't had time to test it myself yet!" School, man. School, my book, and my girlfriend. I'll test it this weekend, I made time!

On another note, I'm curious about work on the new dreadnoughts for the Salarian Union? The brand new ones slated for the First fleet?

If I could, I would have personally contributed the 45,000 (or a even the full 100,000!) pounds needed to finish the funding for Flagship...Even with the exchange rate from the USA! Flagship is an idea I have wanted realized ever since I first picked up Star Trek Bridge Commander a decade ago. I'm glad you guys are sticking with it, and if there's anything I can do, even just spreading the word, I'll do it.

Wishing you all well,

Hand to hand? With standard weapons? And does the Krogan have Biotics? ME Shields do squat against energy weapons, but Klingons don't use shields so assault rifle fire will kill it. Hunter kills both with fusion cannon especially fusion beam.

Hunter could win in hand to hand, but a batleth is scary...omniblade weapons could pierce hunter armor, maybe...idk.

If it's Wrex, I think he could kill either, but not 100% of the time. Depends.

Now, Wrex vs. Worf, that's a fight I'd pay to see!

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be rather Freespace-ish during fighter combat...assuming flying is included in the final product. For those of you who don't know, Descent: Freespace The Great War and Freespace 2 are two very good space flight sims of the late 90's.
