None of these changes were done lightly and with intent to cause anyone to feel shunned or oppressed. Take the pimp for instance:

We removed the option to buy Sandra from her pimp primarily because we can’t control the response of the pimp. While we would be fine giving JC the option to do that under normal circumstances, the idea that she could do that without a misogynistic pimp at the very least raising an eyebrow is extremely unlikely.

In the end, we opted to replace that choice with what we feel is a much better one:
Now you can outright state your intent to kill the pimp before doing so. It gives JC the opportunity to react with more hostility to the inhumane treatment of Sandra, a reaction we felt more people would get value out of in the long run. Because, seriously, screw that guy.

To clarify with Mercedes, she no longer hits on the player because Mercedes and Tessa are no longer there. Mercedes and Tessa were removed in favor of adding Russ. Russ isn’t a completely made up character. Mercedes and Tessa state multiple times that they were waiting for Russ before a Male JC showed up. We felt this would be a fun opportunity to turn things around and create a new experience by having Russ there instead looking for Mercedes and Tessa. Their coexistence doesn’t work from a narrative standpoint. On top of that, they use some of the same logic and triggers, and would have trouble coexisting from a technical standpoint.

Russ is a neat character. He interacts with the doorwoman (who is still fairly flirty with JC mind you), goes upstairs and talks to the bartender, buys JC beers and gives her additional info. He chimes in on the political debate between the bartender and JC if he’s there. He has a lot of work put into him to make up for the loss of Mercedes and Tessa.

We made every change with reason and with a vision of trying to make this game still feel like Deus Ex. Each change was done with careful consideration and thought. We also understand some people will be disappointed by these decisions. While we stand by our artistic choices, we are giving people the opportunity to play the game how they choose, and 1.1 will feature a toggle to reenable the content.

We debated this. It was kind of a no-win situation for us since, as you state, the male gender is used for the ambiguity. After some research, the wiki states that JC did have a childhood. The JC in the vat is supposed to be JC getting augmented, not born.
As far as spoilers go, we would have left it the way you suggest if it was if this was a new game. As it stands, it's 21 years old. We prioritized the accuracy over what could be considered a spoiler.

It is mentioned in the installation guide (that we admittedly could have advertised better) but thank you for making that note here. You do have to modify the .ini files the Kentie launcher put into your user\documents folder.

We just couldn't get the pronouns to work no matter how hard we tried with Harold (the mechanic near the 747) and the OwO secretary during the UNATCO escape. Morpheus was recast simply so we could make him more intelligible. And finally the VersaLife spy in the canal bar had his dialogue reworked because he originally mistakes JC for Paul. Makes sense for Male JC but it was a stretch for the Female JC. Those are the only recasts.

For 1.0, it's a direct replacement.

1.1 will focus on compatibility with other mods and the co-existence of Male and Female JC.

Probably not yet but we're working on it.

1.0 was all about getting the content completed and available to play. Next step is working to increase our compatibility with other mods, especially overhauls.
