In the older articles I had the original sprites but upscaled quite a lot (wit added generated normals and specular). In the screenshots they look nice but up close playing in 1080p you can really see how the ai struggled to upscale the original sprites. I am actually finished with all the original monster sprites upscaled to HD. They will be included in the download files of DN3HD. You'll just have to manually replace them over the new HRP sprites. Basic copy and paste. Same goes with the firtperson sprites. You'll have the choice to play with the original upscaled sprites.

Exactly. I import the HRP models (.md3) into Blender. Then I re-edit the skins to more accurately match the original sprites. In most cases I re-rigged the entire model to manually pose them with the original sprite also imported into Blender as reference. It will never be 100% obviously but I try to get as close as possible. I am going to do this for basically every sprite and not just the enemies. Almost finished with the firstperson weapon sprites. The HRP models are actually quite beautiful, high quality and well made. Polymer just never did it justice in game and the animations just felt awkward to me.
And oh yeah... I actually still use upscaling as well to achieve a more cartoony look but the upscale looks amazing because of the higher quality sprites it can now work with.

Anyway the first person weapon sprites mainly look so good because of the fatality upscale model I used. I used phredreeke's upscaled sprites from the ERP, cleaned the edges of the sprites and then upscaled again. It's still not perfect and some post editing has to be done before I'll be completely happy with it.

Select it in your HUD menu and then press "F" to toggle it.
This looks AMAZING guys! Well done. I have some FPS issues though, on my RTX2060. It keeps dipping below 35fps in some scenes. That's on D9 which I wish to play on. On OpenGL it's a bit better bit still have some serious frame dips.
