Large battles are a big strain on the game. I tend to just auto-resolve them.
If you have not tried 6.3b or hgher I would give that a shot. It corrected at least one cause of odd combat delays.
This is late but Spud created a custom art set which u probably need to install
Update to correct a crash in hover over in inventory.

Version 6.3b is really for Linux and Mac users only - it removes a feature that was added in 6.3, Sensor Range, that does not work on these platforms due to missing game asset.
For Windows users of all versions 6.3a is still the latest version. Which is included in this file

It does not prevent jams just makes them faster to clear. There is a ability that remove jams on the ability tree

That was deemed a bug and corrected in UCP 5.9. The old logic always made it large regardless of original size. The final size could be smaller or larger, since destroyed huge planets or larger would be reduced in size. The logic for that is contained in the dll code. So adjusting it would require decompile, editing, and recomplication. It might be kind of neat to allow construction of various size planets. But not something I’m looking to do in 6.3
