CAFE 0 ~The Drowned Mermaid~

Game review

Somehow I don't remember visual novels being so text heavy. Thankfully they put in a skip button, just be careful with it, cause selecting the option to be able to skip new dialogue just because you've done played day 1 in the demo means it can skip new dialogue after day 1 too. And if you don't deselect skip before the 'Day X' screen it'll continue skipping when you select the character for the day. Thankfully, if you think to save at the day selection screen you can load from there and the skip function will be deselected. Also, for anyone wanting the voiced special, it's spoken in the programers' native language, just fyi. Other than that, if you can't understand the language, but still need to know what happens, just purchase the normal one, you won't be missing out on anything special in the voiced version, and it'll save you money.

Crass humor, more weapon inventory than you can shake a stick at, and sucks-to-be-you stat upgrade options (aka classic RPG options) Frankly, I kinda expected more for just 10 bucks, but hey, it's an indie company. They can't all be diamonds. Issues of minimalism aside, its actually an intriguing game. A few bucks less and this would have been money well spent. Other than that, if you have money burning a hole it your pocket, or just really love minimal indie games, you could find a lot worse for just $10. Just be glad that the humor isn't so droll as to make you groan at a bad pun... then again, I'm only to the sewers yet so... there may yet be bad puns ahead.

Didn't realize this was a re-release of an older game that doesn't exactly invite casual gamers into it's playground. Not bad pricing, but still I could have spent that on something more interesting.

Project Black Sun

Game review

The learning curve is steep as... well, but once you start to get the hang of it, the only gripe is how long it takes find your upgrades, the constant dying, and the large gap inbetween checkpoints. Though, maybe only having a saving AND exiting (gameplay) option comes close to making it on the gripe list. The less than intuitive controls are something of a pain, and makes it all the more difficult to play, but that's probably just an issue of skill and hand/eye coordination.

But hey, its a nearly finished beta build that never saw the light of promotion, and only for 2 bucks... so, not like complaining is going to help. From what I gather, any and all other production on the game is dead ended. So enjoy the game, be prepared to be frustrated often, and hey(!) It's a cheap, full, game, so stop complaining about how hard it is, and just have fun.
